The LSESU is the only student union in the UK that still has a weekly Union General Meeting (UGM); propose, speak and vote on motions; hold elective officers to account and vote on matters regarding the SU and the outside world. It’s also a great spectator sport!

The UGM is essential to how the Union works because it is the sovereign decision-making body of the Union. An agreement with the School means that you should never have a class or lecture at 1pm on a Thursday, so there is no
excuse to miss it! The UGM welcomes people of all political persuasions, and debate is frequently lively and entertaining. Most UGM motions focus on questions of Union policy on issues related to the school, but many feature or focus on wider political debates. As you can imagine , the UGM can become quite rowdy, and cheering and heckling are not uncommon.

Howard Davies, the Director of the School, will apear twice to speak and answer your questions. We also welcome the Presidents of ULU and NUS as guest speakers.

Any student may stand for the positions of Chair and Vice-Chair of the UGM, which are elected during the first UGM of the year. If you don’t go to the UGM you haven’t had the full LSE experience.
