Hamid Gul was born in Sargodha, Punjab,and was commisssioned as a Lieutenant in the Pakistani Army in 1958 in the Armoured Corps and steadily rose to be the DG Military Intelligence (DGMI)[3] under General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. PM Mohammad Khan Junejo who then nominated him to be the ISI chief succeeding General Akhtar Abdur Rahman in March 1987. He was later replaced as the ISI commander by PM Benazir Bhutto in May 1989 and Gul was transferred as the commander, II Corps in Multan.

He did his staff college course from Camberley UK and again secured the top position ever with 99% marks.

Commanded the 1st Armoured Division also known as Fakher-i-Pakistan, and it was in his tenure when India's famous military exercise BRASS TACKS converted into BRASS FLAP, if you remember the famous joke about Rajiv Gandhi dropped the piece of bread from his mouth when he was told that Pakistan 1st Armoured division cant be located despite India's intelligence utmost efforts to find it.

He was presented a Piece of Berlin Wall by the German Intelligence BND which says
"With deepest respects to General Hamid Gul, who helped deliver the first blow.1989"
