- The Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninnuwug (KI) in Northern Ontario is in a fight to protect its rights from exploration and to recover the land in question from the Ontario government.
It all relates to the land claim process which is currently be undertaken has been for several years and the lands in question must be resolved prior to any further issues can take place on the said lands.
The fight is not only with Platinex. The province of Ontario is onside with the continued development. Together, you’re talking about a community with limited resources trying to finance a) the land claim process b) court battles against a team of Platinex and the province (unlimited funds when it comes to legal battles with first nations aka tax payer dollars)
According to platinex “Platinex always seeks to consult with local communities, First Nation or not, prior to exploration activities taking place. Provided that a community demonstrates willingness to consult in good faith, Platinex goes beyond consultation, wherever possible, to build working relationships that genuinely contribute to sustainable economic development in the community.” If this is true, then Platinex should understand the land claim process and further, perhaps put political pressure on the federal government to resolve the land claim issue. In saying that, KI is not even under provincial jurisdiction, therefore, what is the province doing in this battle? Oh yea, the multimillion dollars in taxation revenues, I forgot.
I have seen what their “good faith’ consists of. It consists of time tables with strong wording giving the community dates of meetings and liaison activities. Its unfortunate and pathetic on their part.
I don’t want to write too much on the situation and facebook is limited. However, long story short. Settle the land claim issue. In the end, the community may not want to expropriate these lands as they are on sacred lands, lands that are holy to the people of that community. KI has a rich beautiful history.
This group was started to show the people of KI that, nationally, there is support for their fight and they are not alone. I will attempt to get timeline details as to how it started and where they are at. This is just a very brief introduction.
