- As the bell tower emerges as one of the biggest landmarks on campus, let's work to take it back and make it uniquely Appalachian. Student Government representatives are proposing the following ideas to take back our bell tower:
===========
LIGHT IT IN GOLD!
===========
Other schools light landmarks on campus after athletic victories or other special events as determined by the administration. Why not us? Let's LIGHT THE BELL TOWER IN GOLD periodically to show all of North Carolina that something great has happened on the mountain!
We would not want to sacrifice our reputation as a leader in sustainability, so extensive research would be required to ensure that we are demonstrating our spirit in an environmentally responsible manner. In addition, students shouldn't have to pay for this--we plan to find a group of alums/friends of the University who are dedicated to the cause and are willing to contribute monetarily.
==================================
PROGRAM "HI HI YIKAS!" INTO THE BELL TOWER'S PLAYLIST!
==================================
Let's be honest--it is the most glorious fight song in all of college football. Yes, Michigan's (tee hee) "Hail to the Victors" is powerful, and Notre Dame's "Victory March" is storied, but there is nothing like standing with your Appalachian family and imploring the Apps to "Go, fight, kick ass!" There are alums raising small children all over America who allow their children to curse in one circumstance, and one circumstance only--during "Hi Hi Yikas!" In fact here you go, for your listening pleasure...

Why then, doesn't our symbol of campus play the fight song? C'mon! Both "Simple Gifts" and "Cherished Vision of the Southland" are awesome school songs currently played by the bell tower, but where is the greatest of them all? Let's program "Yikas!" into the bell tower and have it played at the beginning of every athletic event, home or away, to remind us that we are all fightin' Apps!
A BIG THANKS! to HEATHER COATES for letting us use some of her pictures, as featured on this group (including the profile picture). Heather spent an entire project photographing the bell tower during her time at Appalachian, and we are so grateful that she let us use her hard work to advance our cause. Thanks, Heather!
