- Almost 20 years ago the province, city and Concord Pacific (a development company) promised local residents that Creekside Park would be triple its current size. Local residents still do not have their full sized green space. We need your help to change this.
Creekside Park is a small green space that currently extends along Quebec St. but local residents were promised that it would extend to Carrall St. In the initial agreement, the developers were obliged to expand Creekside Park once one of two sites was developed for housing. However, in May 2004, the city council changed the development plan so that Creekside Park would only need to be expanded once BOTH sites were developed.
Local residents fought this change to the Original Development Plan for North False Creek for months but city council voted against the residents and for the benefit of the developer, Concord Pacific.
As such, local false creek residents and all Vancouverites are without a full-sized waterfront park.
The reason for the park delay is that the provincial government has delayed in cleaning or removing the contaminated soil in the development sites around Creekside Park.
To make matters worse, Concord Pacific cut 13 trees from the north False Creek sea wall without the appropriate permits. The City is currently pursing 13 charges against Concord Pacific for the cutting of these trees. Local residents have reported that local duck and bird populations have plummeted since these trees were cut.
Another 7,500 residents will be moving into the B.C. Place area and it is essential that false creek residents get their promised full sized park.
Green space is essential in urban planning models for healthy communities to flourish and for local residents to get the fresh air and cleaner water that green spaces provide. Local residents should be able to walk to green space and not be given the option to drive in their car to green space thus increasing their carbon footprint.
Please help us keep the 20 year promise of Creekside Park alive. This park belongs to the City of Vancouver and all of its residents.
By joining our group you are standing up for urban green space and you will help us lobby the province and city to "Keep the Creekside Park Promise" alive.
With your help we can make this a key local issue in the May 12 provincial election in the new riding of Vancouver False Creek.
Thank you kindly for your assistance.
