Description:
This is a moment of truth for the U.S. media. In December 2007 the FCC gutted the rules that protect local communities from media monopolies. This rule change is a big handout for Big Media and will let giant corporations get even bigger, gobbling up local news outlets in your town. This is bad for journalism, bad for competition, bad for media diversity, and bad for our democracy.

In 2003, the FCC tried to do the same thing, but millions of people demanded that Congress reject the FCC's... (read more)

Analysts are betting that a bid by Comcast to take over NBC Universal would probably be approved by regulators in Washington but with lots of conditions. A merger would also raise a host of regulatory questions as the cable giant...

Ben Hey all —this is a blatantly shameless plug, but if you care about the media giants' influence, you may want to check out the poster I designed over at http://information-control.org. It has the 55 largest media & telecom companies organized into a periodic table of sorts.

We are free Americans in this great country, it is time we voice our opinions and standup to those who want to control and take away our freedoms....(something like China) We are the power of the nation, not our government. They forget we voted them in and can vote them out. Use your power and contact your governmen...t on issues that effect your life and business, or else you will find out that we have many common laws like China with limited freedoms.Read More

"Amazing revelations have emerged concerning already existing government plans to overhaul the way the internet functions in order to apply much greater restrictions and control over the web.

Lawrence Lessig, a respected Law Professor from Stanford University told an audience at this year's Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech con...ference in Half Moon Bay, California, that “There’s going to be an i-9/11 event” which will act as a catalyst for a radical reworking of the law pertaining to the internet.

Lessig also revealed that he had learned, during a dinner with former government Counter Terrorism Czar Richard Clarke, that there is already in existence a cyber equivalent of the Patriot Act, an “i-Patriot Act” if you will, and that the Justice Department is waiting for a cyber terrorism event…" See <http://www.infowars.net/articles/august2008/050808i911.htm>

Monopoly control of information undermines democracy. Many Americans are becoming aware of the way in which corporate medias' censorship and manipulation of news impacts everything from elections to votes in Congress.

In mid-May, the U.S. Senate voted to overturn the FCC's new rules in a bi-partisan voice vote without ...debate.

The House has not yet voted. House Joint Resolution (H.J.R.) 79 is similar to the Senate-passed version. We are trying to build momentum to get the House to take action. From just 31 co-sponsors a short time ago, the bill now has 46 co-sponsors. The goal is 100 in a hundred days. We can do this!

I just want to say thank you for keeping us posted with how far media and conglomerates are trying to override our liberties and rights. We cannot compromise our freedoms! It's great to raise awareness on these issues. I got into these issues after hearing a speaker lecture on media literacy, and found out about the gr...oss population that receives misconstrued information about many events and issues through the media (mainly television and the newspaper.)

Now that it's been a while since I began looking into this, it seems relatively obscure that something that is blatantly part of our reality, and yet still, is not that known due to muddled visions made by the media.

That's why my brother and friend of mine are blogging to unmask the inconvenient truths that inhibit our world, and ultimately compromise our freedoms (and the freedoms of others, and peace of nature and animals alike). We are blogging at http://happylandmanifesto.blogspot.com/

Hi James,

Unfortunately the internet is not available to all people. Roughly 70% of people still get much of their news from local TV, radio and newspapers. Media consolidation means that just a handful of people have enormous control over those important sources of information. We have seen that Big Media companies don...'t serve local communities by covering real issues that people care about and need to know about.

Unfortunately big cable and phone companies are also trying to consolidate power and influence over the internet too. See www.savetheinternet.com for more information on that.

I would love to hear what other people think about why media consolidation is a problem and why you care about reclaiming the public airwaves.

Why are there so many alarmists in the world?

Media consolidation is not a threat. Have you ever heard of the internet?

When happened to liberals hating censorship? What happened to liberals hating monstrous government agencies that try to tell them what they can watch?

If you have a problem with consolidated media the...n stop watching tv and get a fucking life.

You guys are complaining that the FCC is getting smaller and regulating less. If people want to team up and sell all their stations to the same person it should be their right to do so. If you think the media is slanted start up a free press and watch it go nowhere. People like to be catered to and that is why tv is shit.

Buy a computer and watch tv sink into the tar pits.
