From my discussions with many students on campus over the past few days, I have realized that we need a group for those of us who do NOT support the hunger strikers - a place where we can voice our opinions and thoughts on what's wrong with the hunger strike.

I was going to type up the reasons why I personally do not support the hunger strikers, but I want this group to be for everybody who does not support them, for whatever reason.

So whether you think their demands are too vague, too... (read more)

Here is a statement of opposition to the Hunger Strike, which several of our members have put together. We encourage you to send this, or your own statement of protest, to the administration and the hunger strikers, so that they recognize that there is a substantial body of students who don't support the hunger strike.

To the Columbia Administrators and the Hunger Strike Coalition,

Many students, for a wide variety of reasons, have raised questions and concerns
regarding the current hunger strike. It is critical that all voices are given equal representation in matters that affect the entire Columbia community.

The hunger strike coalition has not made an adequate effort to solicit students’ opinions regarding their specific demands, their method of protest, or both. The online Facebook group "We Do NOT Support the Hunger Strikers" already has over 650 members (and growing) all of whom are directly affiliated with Columbia. Thus there is a significant number of students who oppose the hunger strike. I feel that it is imperative that the university administration and the hunger strike coalition acknowledge their dissent.

For that reason, I insist that the university holds a townhall meeting that provides an open forum for ALL students to voice their opinions on the Hunger Strikers' demands. I believe that no decision should be made, or funds committed, on any of these critical matters, without the consent of the general student body.

I hope that we can have a legitimate discussion regarding these very important issues, whereby we collectively contribute to the shaping of our common future.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
