Every year there is a bicycle race from coast-to-coast called the Race Across America (RAAM). For 26 years ultra-cyclists have been pitting themselves against the clock in an extraordinary race. In 2008 RAAM has added a new event, named Race Across the West (RAW). RAW will be a 1036 mile event that must be completed in 92 hours to qualify as an official finisher. This is the first time that a 1000+ mile race has been held in the US.

News:
June 2nd - It's been much too long since my last update. In April, my life was turned upside down with a family emergency. While focusing on the family situation I continued to train to the best of my ability though lowering the intensity of the training to find balance between training and my family situation. After consultation with the Race director, my coach, and sponsors I'm postponing my entry into Race Across the West until 2009. The good news is that I don't lose anything since my entry fee is carried over for one year, my sponsors are all supportive, and my fundraising is still going to a great cause - NAMI. I really appreciate everyone's support so far and hope that you'll continue to support me until June 2009 when I compete in this endurance event! If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I'm looking forward to training over the next year and participating in 2009!!

April 2nd - Only 66 days until race start! It's incredible how fast time has gone since December. Today was a rest day from training and also had a full physical checkup with my doctor today. My doctor kept repeating that this is the best he's seen me. I haven't seen him when I wasn't sick so of course it would be the best he's seen me! Will get most of the test results back on Monday, but so far everything seems good to go!

There are going to be 3 big rides coming up that are simulation rides. These will be 24 hour rides with a short sleep during the ride. If you are interested in helping out by providing support following along then please contact me. I'll be contacting several people directly as well that might be interested. In May is the big 36 hour simulation ride and should be the last of the "big training" rides before the race start on June 8th.

Thanks again for your support and keep telling your friends!

March 16th - Finally launched the site about a week ago and sent an email letting them know it's available. If you haven't seen it yet, please visit it at: http://raceacrossthewest.nami.org. On the media link is a video professionally produced by Double R Productions. Training is going well. The wind has been a major challenge the past few weeks, but hoping for tailwind for most of the race route.

There are many ways that you can get involved. They include: telling others about this group and the race web site, helping with training support for longer rides from now until the race, if you know a company or individual that might want to become a sponsor then please let me know, send an email to raceacrossthewest@nami.org with an encouraging word, and of course donating through the race web site!

February 29th - It's been a little while since I posted last and yes my legs are still attached to my hips though sometimes if feels like they are still turning in circles even when I'm sitting perfectly still. I was holding off on a new post until I could officially launch the new web site, but the donation form testing is taking a little longer than I anticipated. The new site will have most of the same information as is included here, but available to anyone. The video by Double R Productions is on the site, and a blog will be added in the coming days as well. Hopefully I will be able to keep up with the blog every few days to keep everyone up to date on the sheer logistics and training that goes into preparing for an event like this. I'm getting more an more excited and realizing that the start is only 99 days away!!

Stayed tuned for the official site launch and more information on how you can get involved locally!

February 18th - Yes I know that it has been awhile since I've provided an update, but between working and training nothing too exciting has been happening to report. Yesterday I did a century ride (102 miles) early in the morning after having stayed up way too late. After the ride I came home and remembered there is a small group ride near my house that does 10 miles to get people accustomed to road riding. Took my bike off my car rack and jumped back on and rode over to the group ride. Small group of only 6 people and helped the ride organizer by riding at the back to make sure that no one got left behind. Fortunately the rain held off until the ride ended and even then it was only a light mist. Decided to go out to catch a few more miles (what was I thinking??). Ended up with 135 total miles for the day. Felt pretty good afterwards.

For Monday was going to do spin training, but a friend wanted to get outside and ride so agreed to do a 40ish miler. Agreed to start at 10 a.m. to ride after the morning rain storm and get back before the forecasted rain storm for the afternoon. Left the house to start the ride and it was sunny, clear and 64F. Headed out from Alexandria towards Herndon on the W&OD. Strong headwind and constant climbing kept my heart rate above the training zone that I needed to stay in, but kept riding at a quicker pace to not slow my friend down too much. Stopped at Reston Town Center for lunch and watched the black clouds roll in. Headed back to the bikes and within minutes it started sprinkling then raining. Just our luck the wind decided to change direction and again had a strong headwind (15-20 mph). After 20 minutes the rain let up and the sky cleared again making us hopeful that we could stay ahead of the storm. Not so lucky and for the last 15 miles the sky opened up and it poured rain. Found out again that rain is my ideal training weather as we were pushing 20 mph for nearly 25 minutes with minimal effort. Nearing my house on the return and managed to hit the last downhill at 30 mph in the rain. Soaked head to toe and exhausted from the ride today. It was easy to start to get discouraged from the pace and how the ride made me feel physically today, but remembered all the strong training that I've had so far and just chalking it up to a hard day. The only thing I hate more than the cold is the wind (unless it's a tailwind). Relaxing and letting my body recover tonight to be ready for more training on Tuesday.

February 5th - Thanks to Double R Productions we filmed a promotional video that will be available soon! Thanks to their great staff Megan and top-notch interns Melonie and Kristen!!

February 1st - The Facebook Causes Giving Challenge ended today. We were 28th overall out of over 650 organizations participating and raised $3,125! Thanks to everyone who donated and participated by telling others!

January 27th - Did I mention fund raising?? So far we've had 61 donors contribute $1,380 through the Facebook Causes Giving Challenge. We need approximately 300 donors to be win $10,000 from the Case Foundation. There are over 300 people that have joined the cause so far. Please consider joining and donating just $10 to help us earn $10,000! To donate go to: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/view_cause/57339

January 22nd - Fund raising... yes I wrote about this two days ago! Interest is picking up and hoping that each of you will help us get closer to our goal of winning one of the prizes from the Case Foundation. Your donation of only $10 will get us one step closer. As of right now the last place for the $10,000 prize has only 174 donors. Please Join and Donate, then ask your friends to join and donate. your activity will automatically show up in your news feed so your friends will see that you are supporting the cause! Thanks to everyone that has donated so far. If you've joined and haven't donated yet please consider donating! Thanks for everyone's support.

In other news, my February training schedule arrived today from my coach. February will be additional endurance building activities and more core strength training. Maximum riding time has been increased to 5 hours. Going to split up a morning ride and then evening training.

January 20th - Fundraising.... yes I know that it's something that very few people like to do, but it's sometimes necessary to support the most worthy of causes. I'm very fortunate to have the full backing of the organization that I work for in this endeavor. Right now is a special opportunity to raise money, not only for the race, but also for NAMI. Through the generous support of the Case Foundation there is an online Facebook Causes Giving Challenge. On February 1st the Cause with the most individual donors (not dollars, just individuals) gets $50,000 in addition to the donations made to that organization. The second and third place get $25,000 each. There is no reason that we can't pull together and get first place! Your donation of only $10 will help us reach that goal. Give today at: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/view_cause/57339?recruiter_id=5592218

January 16, 08 - It's Official!!! NAMI, the non-profit that I work for, is the Title Sponsor. Stayed tuned in the next few days for more information about a tremendous fundraising opportunity that I will need each of you to assist with. Enjoying my day off from training today and going to enjoy dinner out with some friends.

January 8, 08 - Great weather the last 2 days has allowed me to get outside and get some good riding in. Rode to work and back both days. Finally have a sense of the percentage grade of a couple of hills that I traverse on the way to and from work. They are as steep as I thought they were. Now if I can only remember that the hills during the race will be about the same grade, but that some of them will take an entire hour to climb! I believe that the turtle was onto something so long ago "slow and steady wins the race." My roommate was asleep when I arrived home from work so instead of disturbing him I went outside for some street riding in the dark. Finished up about 10 pm tonight and met all my training goals for the day.

January 6, 08 - Today was my "off" day, but still needed to do an anaerobic threshold test to get better training zones developed. With the help of a friend I performed the test today and sent the results to my coach. His response was "This is about the cleanest and least equivocal LT graph I've seen." This is good and bad. Good that I'm in good shape and within the right zone, bad that it only increases the intensity of my training. Definitely feeling the burn in my legs this evening as this test is literally an all-out effort. Maximum heart rate today was 194 before I "blew up" in cycling terms (which basically means I couldn't go anymore). My friend was hoping that "blew up" meant my heart exploded and I would fall off the bike onto the floor. Maybe they'll bring their camera next time in anticipation!

January 5, 08 – Though training started on December 5th I am starting the training plan from my coach. Very targeted training this month to build endurance and core muscle strength. Schedule is going to be 9 days of training then 1 day off. In only 3 days the training regime is pretty intense and my body is slowly adjusting to the more targeted workouts. My coach says in his training notes for this month, "The training is really hard, not because of the intensity, which is low, but because of the volume." I definitely believe him. I will try to not bore you all with training details unless it’s something interesting on a ride or milestones are met. If you absolutely want to know more about specifics of training contact me directly via email and glad to provide more info for you!

January 3rd - Great news as things are really coming together. Spoke to Double R Productions and they are going to do my promo video. Tentatively we are going to film on February 5th barring any snow on the ground. Double R is donating their time and services for this! Thank you Rosemary and Double R Productions!!

Dec 31st - The new cycling computer is great! It gives me cadence (the speed at which your pedals rotate), heart rate, altitude, % grade of a hill, amongst other information useful for making the most of my training. Did a maximum heart rate test during my ride to help provide better training zones. Happy New Year everyone!

Dec. 28th - Announcing a new edition to the team today. Mr. Scott Saifer of Wenzel Coaching will be my primary coach while I prepare for the race. Scott has outstanding credentials having coached previous Paris-Brest-Paris finishers and several RAAM team riders. I'm looking forward to working with him over the next 5 months in preparation for the big race.

Dec. 24th! It's Official - My entry into the Race Across the West has been processed and I've been added to the online race roster. To see the full race roster go to: http://www-archive.raceacrossamerica.org/Default.aspx?tabid=227

Dec 16 - Picked up a new cycling computer today. Adding heart rate, cadence, and altitude to the data that I can track for each training ride. Got a good outdoor ride in today, before the wind picked up.

Dec 13th - Sponsorship update. What I thought would be the hardest part of this entire endeavor is starting to take shape nicely. Nothing is set in stone yet, but have several promising leads. Once things are solidified I will definitely update everyone. Stay tuned for more information on how you can get involved and show your support!

Dec 9 - I learned to not rely on the actual temperature to determine how cold it really is outside. Went out for an afternoon ride in what was supposed to be 42F weather. Felt 15 degree's colder than my previous days ride. The drizzle and dampness didn't help either. Did an abbreviated outdoor ride followed up with another hour on the trainer.

Dec 8, 07 - Got in a nice 47.3 ride outside today. Weather was sunny and about 42F outside. No wind to speak of either. As I was approaching my house was cranking away to make it through a green light and some girls rolled down their window at the stoplight and were "woohooing" me as I passed! Much better for the ego than the people that yell at you to "get off the road" from their car windows as they see how close they can get to you.

Dec 5, 07 - Stopped by Revolution Cycles tonight to speak to the manager about sponsorship for the ride. He's definitely open to helping out and has suggested a few things that he can do immediately and then can also assist with some discounts and putting me in touch with product reps as well. Going to start putting together a proposal!

Dec 5, 07 -- Training has officially started. A combination of cycling, weights/strength building, and diet to get on track. In the coming days I will provide a better update on training!

Thursday, Nov 22. This morning I spent some time checking out the approximate route for the race. Some major climbing will be involved in the first 55 miles and then again going into Flagstaff. From Flagstaff the route heads up into UT near four corners, into Cortez, CO, then to Pagosa Springs via Durango. Dips slightly into Chama, NM then back into CO before the final downhill into Taos, NM. Full route is 1036.8 miles. Check out the Time Stations along the route at: http://www-archive.raceacrossamerica.org/Default.aspx?tabid=230
Now it's time for an outdoor ride since the weather is perfect!

Wednesday, Nov 21. The weather was perfect for riding, but alas I was at the office getting a lot of things done. After arriving home the weather was still warm enough for outdoor riding so geared up, threw my headlight on the bike, clipped my red flashing light to my back jersey pocket and took out for some laps in my neighborhood. It's a great residential area with little traffic, a few hills, and I know where all the holes/metal covers are so I don't have to rely on my light that much to ride. An SUV coming towards me slowed down and with his window down yelled out "is that legal??" referring to me riding after dark. I yelled back "yeah!" and kept on riding. Amazing what people don't know. I covered 25.3 miles in 1 hr 20 mins for an avg speed of 16.5 mph.

Tuesday, Nov. 20th I was riding in my neighborhood during lunch. Pushing along at 22 mph and a squirrel darts out into the street. He freezes and then starts to run off as I start braking and setting myself up for evasive action. His darting off turns out to have only been a fake and he runs directly under my front tire. My bike wobbles and I toss out to the right landing on my palms (with gloves on) and landing on my right arm. I look over as the squirrel limps away. I collect myself, dust off the minor scrapes and jump back on to get some more miles in.
