- Plug It Out! Unplugged in NYC and Beyond, is a small movement attempting to go BIG. Inspired by the great success of Earth Hour in Sydney, in March 2007, we began Plug It Out! on Earth Day 2007 by removing ourselves from the electric grid, particularly between the hours of 6:30 and 10:30 pm. This went on to become a once a month event with our Plug It Out! members unplugging every second Saturday. This means physically unplugging everything from the walls, (or turning the power off at the main source) & mentally unplugging from all the conveniences and distractions we take for granted, to appreciate all that is available to us, and acknowledge all that is not available to much of the world. We hope you will join us and spread the word! You can do it for an hour, you can do it all night. There are no rules, and we are not saving the planet. It’s about awareness and taking some time back for yourself.
This is a chance to light candles, be peaceful, and not "need": Lights, televisions, computers, appliances, cell phones, flashing gadgets, doodads, and other doohickeys to make the world go round. Yes, even Facebook! It's a special time to hang out or in with friends & family, play music (unplugged), tell stories, poems, jokes, write, dance, meditate, stretch your body, play, drink or eat something local and good, frolic or do absolutely nothing at all. Enrichment not deprivation. And quite a great time as you'll find.
Many of you who participated in Earth Hour this year really got a great deal of satisfaction out of it. Why not do it on a regular basis when you can?
This past Earth Day, April 22 marked the second anniversary of this project.
We hope you’ll join us!
