- The Aerie is changing its name!
USI's student art and literary magazine ought to be just as unique and inviting as the work it publishes, but The Aerie is the title of so many other college, high school, and even middle school journals that a google search returns 1,160 results.
The student editors and officers of the Student Writers Union want to replace the name with one that is edgy and more in keeping with other fine journals’ eschewing of lyricism for its own sake, instead in favor of purposeful meaning. We want to choose a name that holds resonance with our landscape and the process of a reader encountering the images and writing published in the journal.
A fishhook speaks to Evansville’s sense of place, tucked as we are in a crook of the Ohio River, and serves as rich metaphor for the process of being lured, hooked, and changed by the images (whether visual or verbal) of our magazine. Like a hook pulled from a river trout’s mouth before the fish is tossed back to the water, the fishhook does not pull cleanly free; the barb catches, leaves an echo of its shape in the cheek of the fish.
And that, gruesome as it may sound, is how we, the editors of The Aerie and officers, feel is how good literature and art leave us: changed forever, with an echo of its image and voice deep in our flesh.
The upcoming '09 issue of The Aerie will actually be the inaugural issue of FishHook!
