As leaders vie for power in the aftermath of the Kenyan election, millions of Kenyan people working to rebuild their country are without a voice. As violence continues, and political parties battle in the streets and on the pages of the international press, students, journalists, and communities from Kisumu to Mombasa are struggling to tell their own stories.
Born in the celebration of the World Social Forum in January 2007, the Kenyan Independent Media Center has built ties between college professors and hip hop stars, community radio stations and journalists, and has broken news from the diverse communities of Kenya onto an international stage.
Now, as the world wonders what the next steps for Kenyan democracy will be, these activists are taking to the international stage to form ties and fight for a Kenya that truly represents them. By cell-phone text message and by powerful interviews and essays, we have a chance to put everyday Kenyans at the top of the international newswire.
Support the growth of the Kenya Independent Media Center by joining this group, visiting http://kenya.indymedia.org, and by donating even a few dollars to their work. Help a hip hop activist from a Nairobi unofficial/slum community record his next interview. Help a Maseno University professor and student document the crisis and its resolution in Kisumu. And tell your friends and allies to get the news about Kenya and its future from Kenyans themselves. By paying for the SMS/texting charges, the internet cafe time, and the public transport costs of these vital activists, you'll be helping the Kenya IMC tell its story to the world!
Donate now through the Urbana Champaign Independent Media Center, which is fiscally sponsoring the project: http://ucimc.org/info/donate !
