We are the people of Canada and we demand change.
We demand our voices to be heard when we vote.
We demand the change to fairly select representatives rather that being forced to decide on 'winners' and 'losers'.
We demand a fair discussion on changing the broken machinery of our democracy. A discussion free of political campaigning and partisan marketing.
Canadians are fed up with wasted votes, false choices and unresponsive representatives. We want electoral reform and it begins right now.
Here are our demands as voters. These demands are reasonable and our right as citizens and we will reward those parties or politicians who make these demands a reality and we will punish those who refuse to address them:
- We call on the federal NDP to promise to make democratic reform their primary issue and that they require in writing as a condition of any future government coalition deal the initiation of a national debate on electoral reform culminating in a national referendum on the question of the need for change to the voting system. (Amendments/alterations to these demands will be carried out via the discussion forums)
- We call on the BC NDP to promise to bring forward legislation to reform the electoral system in the next parliament and to demand of the BC Liberal government a non-partisan education program for voters followed by a simple question on electoral reform without reference to any particular voting system.
- We call on the municipalities of Canada, especially those in BC that voted in favour of BC-STV, such as parts of Vancouver and Victoria, to adopt a modified form of STV for municipal elections to demonstrate to Canadians that this is a fair system that will lead to robust and balanced governance.
- We call on leaders and media or entertainment personalities to use your fame to raise the issue of democratic reform again and again. To explain to the media and Canadians why the system is broken and to raise the profile of this important issue that affects all others.
Canadians know something is wrong with democracy. They know their vote does not always count and yet when asked they have now four times said no to proposed changes. What is needed is a new approach. Marketing one side against the other is not the answer. Democracy is not about picking a winner and handing them absolute power. Democracy is about picking our representatives to speak for us. So it is also with our voting system. It does not matter which system is used so long as it fairly accounts for a majority or more of the voices of voters. First-past-the-post does not provide this basic fairness.
Democracy is an ongoing process that will never be fully completed. But to have change we need to be brave and take the first step.
If you are ready to take that step please join this group and invite others.
Lets all figure out together what the next step is and take it together.
