- The project took off in May 2007, as a collaboration between Kiran Chaudhry and Adnan Sarwar, when the two musicians met in Lahore. What started off as a few informal jamming sessions with two acoustic guitars has quickly grown to become a live music and entertainment sensation in Pakistan (have you heard of "Club Caramel"!?)
Since their debut gig in July 2007 at the swanky Cosa Nostra in Lahore, this talented and versatile duo has performed several concerts at various high-end establishments in Lahore and Karachi to much critical acclaim. According to Adnan, "Caramel aims to provide an exclusive and discerning audience with high quality live music performances to raise the bar for and relevance of live entertainment in Pakistan".
Their music encompass the large majority of Western music genres ( e.g., Jazz/Blues, Rock'n'Roll, Dance/Electronica and Rhythm'n'Blues, etc.) and they have the ability to make cover songs their own, while also introducing their own original material in the sets. The duo is currently working on their debut album which is eagerly anticipated and likely to be released in late 2008.
Although the core band comprises Kiran Chaudhry and Adnan Sarwar, the duo has regularly worked and performed with several other talented musicians such as Farhan Albert, Meekal Hassan, Fahad Khan, Muhammad Agha, Shehrazad Sheikh, Sanam Saeed, Selina Rashid and Seerat Jafri.
Kiran Chaudhry (Singer/Songwriter/Lead Vocalist):
Oxford-educated, lawyer by training and businesswoman by default, Kiran Chaudhry is a singer and songwriter who sings in both English and Urdu and composes songs on her acoustic guitar.
She has lived in the UK between 1994-2006, first studying Politics, Philosophy, Economics at Oxford University and then qualifying as a lawyer and practicing as a Solicitor in London for several years, before finally returning to her native Pakistan where she is currently based.
Kiran received her initial training in Eastern classical music whilst still at school in Lahore by the eminent maestro, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, of the Pattiala Gharana. She started out by participating in various school singing competitions and musical shows while still in Pakistan. After leaving Pakistan in 1994, she honed her musical skills further through vocal training lessons at London's famous VOXBOX and through a run of live performances on London's live gig and open mic circuit.
She returned to Pakistan in April 2005, after 12 years, and continued her musical journey to much critical acclaim. Her first performances in Pakistan were at the Young Presidents Organisation (YPO) annual event in 2006 followed by the Grounded Cigar Lounge launch, after which she went on to form "Caramel" with Adnan Sarwar.
Her musical influences are primarily Jazz, Blues, RnB/Soul, Funk and Folk ( e.g., Ella Fitzgerald, Eva Cassidy, Sade, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Sarah Mclaughlan, Jewel and Nazia Hassan).
Adnan Sarwar (Lead Guitarist/Composer/Songwriter):
Doctor of Medicine by education and also Pakistan's First Formula Racing Driver, Dr Adnan Sarwar holds an International Racing License and has several international racing successes under his belt before he has even turned 30.
He has been working as a professional musician since the age of 17 and has toured both nationally and internationally as a session musician/guitar player with top Pakistani pop and underground acts such as Mekaal Hasan Band, The Trip, Ali Haider, Ali Zafar, and Zeb and Haniya. He has also performed with various club bands in Sydney, Australia, between 2005-06, whilst simultaneously pursuing a career in emergency medicine.
