D.A. does right! Charges to be dismissed vs. Hempstead 15

In a remarkable reversal, the Nassau County District Attorney's Office has agreed to dismiss all charges against the Hempstead 15 following a six month adjournment in what's called an "ACD" (Adjournment to Contemplate Dismissal).

Additionally, they have agreed to consolidate all of our court cases on one date (TBD) so that we and our supporters may be seen and heard together as we prepare to move forward now to... (read more)

Iraq War Veterans Arrested While Attempting to Deliver Questions to Obama and McCain

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – One hour before the final presidential debate of the 2008 campaign, fourteen members of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) marched in formation to Hofstra University to present questions to the candidates. IVAW had requested permission from debate moderator Bob Schieffer to ask their questions during the debate, but received no response.

The contingent of veterans in dress and combat uniforms attempted to enter the building where the debate was to be held in order to ask questions about poor veterans' healthcare and supporting war resisters of the candidates, but were turned back by police. IVAW members at the front of the formation were immediately arrested, and others were pushed back into the crowd by police on horseback. Several members were injured, including former Army Sergeant Nick Morgan who suffered a broken cheekbone when he was trampled by police horses before being arrested.

"Neither of the candidates has shown real support for service members and veterans. We came here to try and have serious questions answered, questions that we as veterans of the Iraq war have a right to ask, but instead we were arrested. We will continue to ask these questions no matter who is elected. We believe that the time has come to end this war and bring our troops home, and we will be pushing for that no matter what happens in this election." said Jason Lemieux, a former Sergeant in the US Marine Corps who served three tours in Iraq, and member of IVAW.

A total of ten veterans were arrested during the action, including Matthis Chiroux (Army Sergeant), Kristofer Goldsmith (Army Sergeant), Adam Kokesh (Marine Sergeant), Mike Spinnato (Marine Sergeant), Geoff Millard (Army Sergeant), Marlisa Grogan (Marine Captain), Nathan Peld (Navy, 1998-2004), Nick Morgan (Army Sergeant), James Gilligan (Marine Corps, 6 years) and Jose Vasquez (Army & Army Reserves, 1992-2007).

Dear Supporters,

Thank you all for so quickly joining this group and becoming part of the defense of our civil liberties and rights as Americans.

We in IVAW who were at the actions, the allies on the ground, and especially the Hempstead 15 are thankful for all of your support. We are committed to keeping you all "in the loop" as much as we can, with frequent updates concerning everything resulting from the October 15th Action.

I have posted the questions that we wished to have addressed by the candidates on this group. I think that it's important we do not lose focus, and still fight to achieve the original goals of our actions at the Presidential Debates.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE CALL, WRITE AND FAX BOTH CAMPAIGNS AND DEMAND THAT THEY PUBLICLY ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS!!

See the following websites to contact each candidate!

Nick Morgan, the injured Veteran that most have seen pictures of is currently recovering in Philadelphia. After receiving sub-par treatment at an emergency room in Long Island, he went to the VA hospital to get a second opinion.

He is going for reconstructive surgery next week.

As we, the Hempstead 15 will be going to court next month, we'd like to compile all the photographic and video evidence that we can possibly muster.

We'd specifically like to see footage of Nick as he was trampled by the horse, and other evidence of excessive force by the Nassau County Police Department.

Please refrain from political debates on our message board, as it is both distracting and divisive. Please feel free to use the message board to post news articles, pictures and videos pertaining to the IVAW action on the 15th ONLY!

Thank you all, and please remember to spread the news, and spread this group, as widely as you possibly can. Regardless of political affiliation or belief, I'm sure we can all unite around a want for justice and accountability for what happened the other day.

Please remember that the police were under the direction of the Secret Service, and the Presidential Campaigns! Like the war in Iraq, blame must be placed on those who set the policies! We will not allow Obama or McCain to use the individual Police Officers as scapegoats for the events of October 15th! The Candidates were the ones handing down the orders, and they above all should be held accountable!
