--- UPDATE FEB 13th - NO CHANGE ----

Friends, I spoke to Mama Kenn yesterday and she has build a roof and windows in the orphanage where she is taking care of many of the children in Ukunda. She thanks everyone once again. These children now have a place to sleep (although still not the money to go to school, this is a lot better than where they would be without all of your help.)

Unfortunately there has been no real change in the political situation in Kenya. Kibaki continues to hold on to his position and power as prime minister. I have just posted an article from my favourite magazine - the economist. Please read it and stay as informed as possible.

--- UPDATE JAN 31st - MORE $ SENT BUT LESS HOPE FOR THE FUTURE ----

A couple of days ago, with the help of your generous donations, I was able to send 28832 KSH (~$403 CDN) [Western Union MTCN#335 526 1466] over to Mama Kenn. She will be using this money to continue taking care of the many orphans in her area providing them with food and shelter.

As for the future of Kenya, I am extremely worried. With the help of Mr. Annan, the 'government' and the opposition finally sat together, but nothing came out of it. And now, a member of the opposition party has been killed (assassinated?) leaving very little hope of the two sides meeting again anytime soon. :S

--- UPDATE JAN 22nd - UPDATE FROM YCI ----

As mentioned in my previous post, a member of YCI went to go visit Mama Kenn. Here is her disturbing update... :(

"Mama Ken was victimized after the election by local youths who taunted her for being a Kikuku, and also accused her of thinking she was better than everyone else because she had had Mzungus to stay. They burnt her second hand clothes stall and also her possessions inside her house. She lives with three teenagers - the others are fortunately away in school. She moved the boys into a small room in a shared house and herself stays in a different guest house every night, going in through the front door of one, coming out the back and going to another in case she is followed. She has a larger bungalow half built and hopes to get it finished by April, when the other kids come home from school. The incident she mentioned to Hussein was a Kikuku elder who was killed and his family attacked with pangas. Then they cut off his arm, nailed it to a tree and left a letter in it, saying he should have gone back where he came from.
Despite all of this she seemed cheerful! I've asked Kasena to keep in touch and help her out if anything bad happens again."

---- UPDATE JAN 20th - OHHHH MAN ----

2 pieces of news:

#1) Youth Challenge International had a volunteer in Kenya who went to visit Mama Kenn. They made a donation on behalf of the organization and was able to confirm everything mama kenn had been telling me about the situation in Ukunda and the orphanage she is running. Not that I ever doubted her, but it is good to note that YCI is also helping out.

#2) I debated for a while on whether or not to include this piece of news on this group. Please brace yourselves... I received a text from mama kenn today. She took two more orphans in today into the mini half-built orphanage she is running because their parents were KILLED yesterday. It is hard to decipher this text message, but here it is "they killd a man and her wife whom we go to church together and cut there hands on top of the tree..." WTF!!!!! :(

---- UPDATE JAN 17th - MORE HELP NEEDED. MORE FUNDRAISING ----

The situation in Kenya is getting better but remains unstable. I spoke to Mama Kenn today and her entire area has been burnt down so she is not living at home. She is currently at a semi-built 'house' with no roof along with 20 orphans and other members of the community who have nowhere to go.

Many of you let me know after I had already sent the first batch of funds you would like to donate. So, I will be sending over some more money with your help. The money will be used to build a roof for this orphanage (~$400CDN) and the rest will be used as usual to feed the kids in Ukunda who are in need.

Please contact me a.s.a.p if you would like to help. I plan to send the funds mid-next week.

Thanks,
Hussein Fazal

---- UPDATE JAN 10th - WORRIED ABOUT THE FUTURE ----

I just read that the meeting between Kibaki and Odinga, administered by Ghanaian President John Kufuor ended in disappointment. Clearly, I do not know enough about Kenyan politics or the exact situation to have an authoritative opinion, but my guess is that Kibaki did not want to agree to an independent source looking at the election results because he KNOWS that he rigged the election!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7181184.stm

Anyhow, Let's continue to support the Kenyan people. There are still many children in Ukunda who need our help, and I am sure there will be for a long time. I plan to begin another fund raising drive on Monday and will reach out to all of you then.

---- UPDATE JAN 7th - MORE FUNDRAISING? ----

Even after I had sent the $ to Mama Kenn on Sunday, I continue to receive support and hear from MANY people looking to donate.

What I am going to do is see how the situation plays out in Kenya over the next week or so, and then based on the conditions and necessity, reach out again to raise more money.

I spoke to Mama Kenn today and she received the money and is extremely thankful. She is using it to feed and shelter the children in Ukunda and has asked "the lord to bless all of us for our help"

Thanks!
Hussein Fazal

---- UPDATE JAN 6th - RAISED $ for 1200 MEALS ----

Friends,

With your generous help, I transferred $ 925CDN to Mama Kenn today [Western Union MTCN # 3967879906]. That is around 60,000 KSH. A local can get a very good meal for around 50 KSH. So, we have sent over enough money for 1200 MEALS!

Your money is going straight to Orphans who are in need. Now, let's continue to pray for the situation in Kenya to change.

Thanks!

--- UPDATE JAN 5th - GROUP CREATED ----

I will be sending money to Mama Kenn on
SUNDAY (JAN 6TH) MORNING.

She has the purest heart of anyone i know. A SMALL portion of the money will be used to feed and protect her AND THE REST WILL BE USED TO FEED AND PROTECT ORPHANS WHO ARE IN NEED.

PLEASE CONTACT ME A.S.A.P IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE.
