so what computer do I need on campus?
Noelle Penner says "I think it's really up to the student what they prefer. But, most of my friends have PC laptops, prob 15" and they are handy to take around to take study groups or take to class if you need to give a presentation. But if they don't think they will ever need a computer that they need to take places, then a desktop is good. I would suggest a PC, because we use Microsoft programs a lot, but there are parallel programs, so ya. lol If there are new students that have questions, you can give them my e-mail: npenner@calpoly.edu and I'd be happy to answer them Hope that helped,Noelle:
Chris Parsons says, ""I enjoyed a desktop, I dont see the need for a laptop with the lab that we had when i was there. I hate Macs, and you cant do the work we do because it doesnt run the programs we use, so PC all the way."
Dr. Cavaletto has a word about computers at Cal Poly....
"As for what computer to purchase, I would follow your personal preference.
For 90% of what you do you will need Word, Excel, and PowerPoint which are available on both the MAC and Windows based computers.
The few programs that are Windows based only, AutoCad, Solid Works, Surveying Software, etc. are available in our department computer labs and in most computer labs across the campus.
Laptop vs Desk: Again, this is a matter of personal working style. A laptop is convenient in that you have your files and computer access at your finger tips. The campus is expanding its wi-fi network so you can get an internet connection from most places in the campus core if you use a laptop.
Some students, but not many, use their laptop during class to take notes. Most use their laptop to work on assignments between classes.
If you don't have a laptop, there are many open computer labs on campus (we have two in the department) that permit students to do their work between classes.
Students use either flash drives or USB external hard drives to carry their files and plug them into which ever computer they are going to use. Call me if you have more questions...anytime 805-756-2378."
