- Novelists Christine Suchen Lim and Courttia Newland are leading a residential writing project this week at Pulau Ubin. Over five days, 14 writers will be discussing their work and exploring new forms in a rustic tropcal setting. This project is the fruit of 18 months of discussions and relationship building and is a partnership between the British Council, the NAC and Catalyst Central, a not-for-profit literary organisation headed by poet Alvin Pang and publisher Fong Hoe Fang.
Participants, including Alvin and Hoe Fang, will be discussing their experience at a special session organised as part of the Singapore Writers Festival on Saturday 31st October, while Courttia will be sharing his experience of writing urban lives alongside Singaporean novelist Daren Shiau on Sunday 26th (details below).

Courttia Newland is a master at highlighting multicultural aspects of the urban environment and infusing this into his writings. Courttia will be joined by Daren Shiau, a Singaporean novelist and a poet, whose book Heartland explored the idea of Singaporeans’ sense of rootedness and rootlessness. Courttia and Daren will be sharing their thoughts and insights in being writers in a multicultural world and how this has developed their individual creative writing style.

This October, 14 Singaporean writers are taking part in a week-long creative writing camp on Pulau Ubin, based on the renowned Arvon retreats in the United Kingdom and organised by Catalyst Central, a not-for-profit arts initiative directed by Alvin Pang and Fong Hoe Fang. Some of the participants and tutors will share their camp experiences and discuss the value of structured writing residencies in sharpening writing skills. Two films by Singaporean filmmakers are playing at the UK's leading short film festival, Encounters. Tanjong Rhu (The Casurina Cove) is Boo Junfeng's third film to be shown in the the festival and plays in the International Panorama, while Sun Koh's Tu Nv (Dirty Bitch) plays as part of the Late Lounge. Over the last three years, strong relationships have been forged between Encounters and Singapore and these links will develop further over the next year.

University of London’s Central School of Speech and Drama (Central) is interviewing in Singapore for some of its three-year, full-time undergraduate courses, and its one-year full-time/two-year part-time postgraduate courses.
