Save St James Gate brewery - home the legendary Guinness.
Lovers of Guinness are facing a bitter possibility: the historic St. James' Gate brewery, which has churned out the black stuff since 1759 will soon be up for sale. Diageo, the parent company of Guinness announced that its reviewing its brewing operations in Ireland.
The historic site on the River Liffey in Dublin is a mecca for Guinness enthusiasts and was once the world's largest brewery. Diageo is considering selling the St. James' Gate brewery and shifting production to a site outside the city. Thanks to a booming real estate market, the historic brewery could fetch up to £2 billion.
Guinness is surrounded in myth and legend. Its long history has a strong sense of place and identity. St James Gate is synonymous with this. If St James Gate is sold for development and/or becomes a token micro brewery (as has been suggested), it will become artificial, and lose everything that it currently is.
This sale must not go ahead. This is what you can do to help.
