How more derogatory can it be for Our Own NNPC in NEW Joint Venture partnership with Russian GAZPROM to set up a NEW company for the JV and named it NIGAZ
For all Nigerians and especially those in diaspora, I think this is our govt helping to portray our already soiled global dignity more disrespectfully with their insensitive actions.
Yes, the accronym matches well with the JV business but at least they should be mindful about what we portray to the outside world. They need to watch 'Coach Carter' by Samuel Jackson and hear a script describing 'Niggers'...this is derogatory -surely not Nigerian-like
PLEASE LET's JOIN FORCES IN MAKING OUR GOVT TO RENAME THIS JV formed 24/06/09...
I think this write up will shed a bit of light to a similar precedence in Russia...I have to bring it forth for all
''I see it's no joke:)
But this event is just hilarious, I mean this company's name is just right for a Russian-Nigerian joint venture from a native-Russian speaker standpoint, especially if her or his English command is limited, but there was surely someone in Nigerian government who could have thought about it. Most Russians who don't speak English won't even understand what the fuss is about.
If it can offer some consolation I'll tell you a little tale about Russian energy sector privatization :
Once upon a time there was a giant, continent-wide electricity distribution and Generation network, which was called RAO UES (Rossijskaja Avtonomnaja Energo Sistema , or Russian Autonomous Energy System), something like that. When it came to privatization it was separated unto 14 regional energy companies, which names were, incidentally, composed of first syllable of the region's name and with an -energo( Energy) suffix.
The problem in here lay in homonymic nature of some syllables, for example, Kaliningrad region (the westernmost part of Russia, former Koenigsberg) had to have a Kal-energo energy company. Kal in Russian means excreta, or, for the less literally-inclined, shit. You can imagine the ruckus in the company's future CEO office when this name was announced - of course they've said- "We don't want to be called Shit-energy company!" The name change came rapidly - it was agreed that the company would have to be called Yantar-energo (or Amber-energy), to honor one of the region's export products - amber and amber jewelry.
And this was it.''
