- Description:
- The launch of the Perpetual Gypsy Pavilion is a response to a twofold crisis. While 2007 saw the acclaimed first Roma Pavilion in Venice (www.romapavilion.org), the planned Roma Pavilion in 2009 was canceled at very short notice. This highly unfortunate situation is made all the more acute by the fact that in 2009, the Venice Biennale is taking place amid extreme violations of the human rights of Romani People (Gypsies) in Italy and in other European countries.

- The
PERPETUAL GYPSY PAVILION
was officially launched at the
VENICE BIENNALE 2009
on Sunday 7 June, 12 am.
Hungarian Pavilion, Giardini, Venice.
(as announced on E-FLUX)

The late cancellation of the the planned Roma Pavilion 2009 made the dire situation of Gypsies in Italy and their lack of representation in the public sphere all the more acute.
In response to the state of affairs, we are calling on the public and the art community at the Venice Biennale and beyond to return the POSTCARD being distributed in National Pavilion (and on our website). We ask you to FINGERPRINTS yourself in an act of solidarity with those who are being force-fingerprinted by the Italian government.
The very designation - a Perpetual Pavilion - carries within it the hope and demand that no matter what the organisational, financial, artistic or political situation, a Romani pavilion or representation will have a presence within the established art context.
Furthermore, for the first time in 2009, the absence of Gypsy artists in national pavilions is being addressed in the mediated form of the "Postcard from Venice" (see website). The Postcard from Venice, which initiates the Gypsy Pavilion in 2009, is being distributed in the context of and with the official support of numerous National Pavilions - including, so far:
The Pavilion of Greece
The Pavilion of Hungary
The Pavilion of Italy (Arsenale) (needs re-confirmation from non-curatorial officials)
The Pavilion of Poland
The Pavilion of Estonia
The PavIlion of Serbia
The Pavilion of Turkey
The Pavilion of Uruguay
Since the launch, new pavilions that have joined are:
The Nordic & Danish Pavilion
The Pavilion of the Comoros Islands
More national pavilions, we hope, are to follow. Many renowned artists, thinkers, curators, public figures and national pavilions have already declared their solidarity (see website).
===============================
We hope that by 2011 the organisers of the Roma Pavilion, which did such an important and magnificent job in 2009, will be ready to re-start their work in full by 2011.

Thank you for your support.
All the best
