- You are the change makers of the Asia-Pacific!
1.3 billion young people live in the developing world - the largest-ever youth group in history. Over two-thirds of the world’s youth live in Asian Pacific countries. People under the age of twenty make up a third of the population in Timor-Leste and half the population of Papua New Guinea. The average Tongan is 21 years old. Around 40% of Kiribati’s population is under the age of 14. Young people represent a great force to bring about change in the region.
There has never been a better time to focus on young people in this region. Young people are healthier and better educated than previous generations and they will join the workforce with fewer dependents because of changing demographics.
It is proven that developing countries which invest in better education, healthcare, and job training of young people between the ages of 12 and 24 years of age, could produce surging economic growth and sharply reduced poverty.
As young people, we are the immediate future of our countries, and the betterment of future generation largely depends on us. We have the power (believe or not) to create a better environment for ourselves. It is up to us to create that difference. You are the present and you are inheriting the future.
‘Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country’ cliché as it sounds, it is true. Why wait for someone else to help when you can do it yourself. Be the difference you want to be and start now by learning what is happening in your country. Simply understanding the issues that surround your community is already a step in the right direction.
The World Bank wants to hear from you. We need your input, your understanding, your involvement. Together, we face many challenges, including finding and ensuring fair distribution of resources. Youth can be powerful agents for change if given the opportunity to voice their views and develop and test their capabilities and creativity. This is your opportunity…..tell us what you think, what you would change, how you would do it. Share your experiences, your ideas and your concerns.
