The multimedia art exhibit Mentors Mujeres Muertos y Milagros will be on view at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center for just one more week. This is the only exhibit at the Guadalupe to date involving 60+ artists including paintings, drawings, conceptual sculpture, digital work, mixed media, photography, and installatio...n. The work represents a part of the diverse, growing, changing and sometimes invisible San Antonio contemporary art community. The San Antonio Current selected the exhibition as a Critic's Pick.
There is a media component to the exhibit. We have recorded several video interviews with key board members and most of the artists. This is your last chance to have your interview videotaped. Please call in advance to schedule your interview.
Hundreds of people of all ages have seen the exhibit since our October 10th preview. Literally, bus loads of school children have visited the Galeria. On behalf of the artists, the Guadalupe and myself, I would like to extend the invitation to you to join us at the closing reception on Friday, November 20 from 6-9 p.m. at the Galeria Tonantzin at 723 S. Brazos, one block north of the Guadalupe Theater at El Paso. Feel free to bring along your favorite beverage or join us for a glass of sangria.
If you wish to contribute food or make a donation to the reception, please do not hesitate to call me at (210)271-3151 x230.

Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center
The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center presents its annual presentation of “Historias y Recuerdos,” an original dance project featuring the Guadalupe Dance Company Nov. 19-22, 2009 in the historic Guadalupe Theater at 1301 Guadalupe Street. “Historias y Recuerdos” incorporates traditional Mexican dance and music framed by ...a video backdrop of San Antonio stories.
“In an effort to discover their own identity and gain more opportunities, many Mexican families moved away from their beloved barrio,” says Belinda Menchaca, education director for the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. “Along with them went the countless stories of generations past that live only in the minds of many community members’ parents and grandparents. Years of service in the military, Grandma’s delicious menudo, playing games on the corner and listening to the radio, were all part of life many years ago.”
Today is a very different world, but those same moments of sharing and family values are still at the core of many families’ roots and rich heritage. Family, youth, love and sacrifice are the themes of the inspiring original choreography by the Guadalupe Dance Company honoring the memories of generations past bringing them to life on stage.
Unique in their expression, the dancers translate stories collected from local community members into beautifully choreographed dance theater segments. Informed by video interviews, the dancer-choreographers designed the staging and dance segments based in the Folkloric tradition. Audiences will be treated to an interdisciplinary experience in which music, theater, video and dance are interwoven. Annual staples like Fronteras, a piece that takes the audience on a border crossing voyage, and Noticias de Mama, a suite recounting Mr. Medranos supernatural experience while serving overseas, continue to hit close to home with their ever current subject matter. New interviews, stories and experiences will also be incorporated. The original choreography and staging is created by a team of Guadalupe Dance Company dancer-choreographers led by Jeannette Chavez, Dava Hernandez, Jorge Gaxiola and Luis Garcia.
Performances are at 8 p.m. on Thursday - Saturday, Nov. 19 – 22, 2009 with a 3 p.m. Sunday matinee Nov. 22, 2009. Tickets are $10 and $8. GCAC members receive a HALF OFF discount. Please call 210-271-3151 for information, or visit www.guadalupeculturalarts.org. This unique combination of oral histories, traditional dance and modern technology creates a theatrical experience for audiences of all ages.

Dear Friends of Contemporary Art,
Please join artist and curator, David Zamora Casas, and Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Executive Director, Patty Ortiz on Tuesday, November 10 from 6-8 p.m. at the Galeria Tonantzin for an intimate conversation and reception celebrating the art and artists of Mujeres Mentors Muertos y M...ilagros. About the exhibit
Casas' vision offers a trans-cultural, trans-gender group that includes new, emerging, old, young, established, fresh, ignored, and popular artists, all bringing their complex identity and unique views on issues of consequence. Casas' approach is all-encompassing and promises to stir an intriguing dialogue regarding this multi-dimensional approach.
