Sunday listening in the NGM lobby today features the "Great Guitars" recordings of jazz masters Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, and Charlie Byrd in the 1970s and 80s. These were hallmarks of the Concord Jazz label.

: Pablo Picasso - "The Old Guitarist."
This 1903 painting by Picasso is one of the most famous to ever depict the guitar. It is representative of Picasso's Blue Period.
"The Old Guitarist" is currently on display at The Art Institute of Chicago.

: Antonio de Torres Jurado (1817-1892).
Torres is considered the creator of the 6-string guitar--primarily the classical guitar--as we know it today. Building on the designs of previous luthiers, he focused on the shape, the bracing, and the soundboard to create a balanced and tonally rich instrument that eclipsed every...thing that had come before. Modern classical makers still use the designs he created.
We'll have more on Torres in the future. In the meantime, Happy Thanksgiving.

: Rickenbacker Advertisement Featuring John Lennon.
This 1965 magazine ad features "Beatle" John Lennon and his 6-string 1996 model. It was one of the first ads to feature a famous rock & roll guitarist, and states that John and his Rickenbacker were "inseparable." The ad also mentions the company's bass and "famous 12-string."

: Roy Buchanan - The World’s Greatest Unknown Guitarist.
One of the most overlooked blues rock guitarists ever, Roy Buchanan was revered by fellow musicians but may have been the most reluctant guitarist to ever to pick up the instrument. He lived one of the strangest lives of any respected guitarist since Robert Johnso...n, yet is still barely known by the general public. Whenever his guitar prowess threatened to metamorphose into fame and fortune (like possibly joining The Rolling Stones), Buchanan ran away from the limelight until he could re-emerge in some little-scrutinized side project.
After winning a Grammy for Best Blues Album and being the subject of a PBS documentary, Buchanan was found hanged in a jail cell in Virginia (the jury is still out on whether it was suicide or police manhandling).
1977's "Loading Zone" is Roy at his wicked best, with scorching solos riding side-by-side with a deft touch that made him one of the supreme "Masters of The Telecaster."

Sunday listening in the lobby of the Museum today is Return to Forever's fusion classic, "Romantic Warrior."
With Al Di Meola's stellar guitar runs playing off of Stanley Clarke's equally phenomenal bass playing, the band's 1976 release remains a stellar example of guitar jazz fusion. Di Meola's tour de force on the al...bum is "Majestic Dance," but every cut is outstanding. One of the best instrumental recordings of the past 50 years. http://bit.ly/5V7MTi

: The Banana Splits - Vox Guitars.
For our Saturday morning cartoon, the NGM is featuring a return to the past, and more Vox guitars. "The Banana Splits Adventure Hour" ran from 1968 to 1979, and featured a wacky, yet groovy, group of animals playing rock and roll. Note the tear-drop shaped Vox Spitfire in the middle, a...nd rare single cutaway Vox Grand Prix semi-hollow body on the right.
Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky attempted to rock -- (their theme song, "The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana)" actually cracked the Billboard Top 100) -- but we'd say that their guitars are even more classic than they are.

: The Voxmobile.
This 1967 custom car was designed as a promotional vehicle for Vox Guitars. Shaped like the classic Vox Phantom, it was built by George Barris, famous for building the original Batmobile. The car had working input jacks for 32 guitars, and featured an entire onboard amp setup.
The Voxmobile was eventua...lly purchased by guitarist Jimmy Bryant, known as "the fastest guitar in the country." It has traded hands several times since then, and can now be viewed at http://www.thevoxmobile.com

The National GUITAR Museum A new book claims that Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" became the most popular song in radio history not because it's the perfect acoustic/electric guitar anthem, but because its 8-minute length gave radio DJs the chance to sneak off for cigarette breaks. You be the judge. http://bit.ly/25YGer

Cigarettes. You can blame them for stained teeth, black lungs and one other nuisance: the maddening ubiquity of Led Zeppelin’s classic-rock stalwart “Stairway to Heaven.”
