Elect Hank Erwin LT. GOV 2010 Great trip up to Cherokee County in NE Alabama yesterday. Our Campaign stopped to visit Jax State University, the Mayors of Piedmont & Centre, a brief visit to Cedar Bluff on Lake Weiss, and an evening meal with the Cherokee County GOP at their annual Banquet.

Elect Hank Erwin LT. GOV 2010 Despite the rainy weather, the campaign has had a productive day in Walker County! I got to meet with several local pastors, the Mayor of Jasper, and good friend Senator Charles Bishop. The afternoon schedule looks just as busy with a radio interview at WIXI and a speaking engagement with the Walker County Republicans.

Not a proud moment for the Union soliders.. the marker reads

On May 2,1862 , Union troops of the 19th and 24th Illinois and the 37th Indiana Regiments commanded by Col. John Basil Turchin went on a rapage through the town. They Looted and plundered stores and homes, stealking clothing, jewelry and anything of value, destroying what they didn't want. For Months afterward, the soldiers stabled their horses in some of the town's churches, burned the pews for firewood and destroyed the interiors.

The marker does go on to say.. that Col. Turchin, born Ivan Vasillevitch Turchinoff in Russia, was court martialed in Huntsville for encourging these actions, but his wife appealed to Abraham Lincoln for Clemency on his behalf. Turchin was promoted to Brig. Gen one day before the court martial.
