“A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.” (Proverbs 1:5 NASB) Last week I was meeting with a college student I am mentoring (scary, huh, that Baylor would allow me to ruin a college sophomore) and we were talking about how to create a ser...

Most of us are raised with the thought that theology is all about God- what God is like, What God has said, and what God has done, and what mostly dead people have speculated in these three areas...

Last week a friend of mine that was helping us set up for Fear Factor went to a local pet store to buy 1500 crickets to dump on a student in our “Yuck Chamber,” and she was denied the ability to purchase them because it would be “animal cruelty.” She asked why they sell crickets in the first p...

Interesting blog (loved your last paragraph)! As a biologist I... See More’d like to point out there is a distinction between Darwin’s theory of evolution (Darwinian evolution) and Social Darwinism. Darwinian evolution is a set of scientific principles that describe how nature works (accumulation of mutations in genes, population changes, speciation, etc.). The definition for “survival of the fittest” is simply ‘the differential ability of organisms to survive and reproduce (pass one’s genes on to the next generation)’. Scientifically an organism is considered fit solely based on its ability to survive long enough to make babies. Those organisms most successful at contributing to the next generation are most fit. The theory is not intended as a moral compass (It does not state we Should see one another as competitors) - it simply describes what happens when populations in nature face overpopulation, predation and/or limited resources: not all offspring are equally fit in any given environment. In contrast, Social Darwinism is the misuse/misrepresentation of science to further one’s agenda (e.g. eugenics, ridding society of those judged to be less worthy, etc.) by labeling another human as less “fit” - hence the term “only the strongest survive” - used in an entirely different (social) context. Social Darwinism – not to be confused with Darwinian evolution – has contributed to much suffering and the loss of many human lives (which Darwinian evolution is then often mistakenly blamed for). The misconstruing of Darwinian evolution’s science principles as an excuse to deem others “less fit” socially is analogous to the misuse of scripture by some “religious” individuals to justify the abuse of fellow humans. Sadly, both abuses have resulted in a lot misplaced resentment.

“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28 NIV) I have been struggling with the message I preached on Sunday night at Fear Factor that pointed to Jesus’ words in Matthew 10:28. It i...

So what do you follow up the Video blog of the month with? I don’t know. It made me think of one of my favorite anonymous quotes from English class when I was a freshmen in college. “Biting my truant pen I said, ‘Fool, look into thy heart and write!’” So I will look in and write. The vide...
