Jamestown Settlement / Yorktown Victory Center On November 23, 1775, Lord Dunmore, the Colonial Governor of Virginia, occupied Norfolk and began to fortify the area against Colonel William Woodford, commander of the 2nd Virginia Regiment. This event led to manuevers that culminated in the Battle of Great Bridge on December 09, one of the earliest military encounters in the Revolutionary War in the Southern states.
