In his General History, Smith described Christmas with the Kecoughtan: “…where we were never more merry, nor fed on more plenty of good oysters, fish,... flesh, wildfowl, and good bread, nor never had better fires in England than in the dry, warm, smoky houses of Kecoughtan” [General History, Book 3, Chapter 8].

Jamestown Settlement / Yorktown Victory Center On this day in 1775, royal Governor Lord Dunmore ordered Captain Samuel Leslie and the British 14th Regiment to attempt an assault against Colonel William Woodford and the 2nd Virginia Regiment across a narrow causeway on the Elizabeth River at Great Bridge. The British forces were driven back with only one Virginian w...ounded. The Battle of Great Bridge was one of the earliest military encounters in the Revolutionary War in the Southern states.
