I have asked you here today because I want to apologise. I want to apologise to the public. I want to apologise to my colleagues and to my supporters. But most importantly I want to apologise to the people of Epsom. I promised the people of Epsom I would make them proud of me as their MP...

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/3042812/Rodney-Hide-says-sorry-for-trip
ACT leader Rodney Hide has apologised for using $10,000 of taxpayers' cash to send himself and his girlfriend on a holiday in Hawaii.
Mr Hide has also said it was wrong to take his girlfriend, Louise Crome, with him on an official fact-findi...ng trip to Europe, Canada and the United States, also at taxpayers' expense.
He said he would pay back the $11,952 cost of taking Ms Crome with him on that trip, which was to study council mergers but coincided with the wedding of Crome's brother in the United Kingdom.
"I have shown poor judgement. For that I am very sorry," he said.

"I accept that I have failed to live up to the important principle that I have set, that politicians should always remember that they are spending taxpayers' money, and therefore must spend it carefully."

I stopped passionately supporting the ACT party after the 2005 election but I note that Rodney Hide has been in the news for using taxpayer funded perks despite being against them. There is nothing wrong with that - it is his legal entitlement. Likewise, although I do not agree with an interest free student loan system... I would be an idiot not to take advantage of it and somehow voluntarily choose to pay interest on my loan while everyone else does not. Ever since entering Parliament Rodney has been the only politician to consistently vote against salary increases and additional benefits for MPs. He puts his values where his mouth is and is certainly not a hypocrite.Read More

I too voted ACT but not again. Rodney you're such a hypocrite. I've worked in remote parts all around the world without a "girlfriend, partner" to hold my hand. New Zealand whimpish politicians need to toughen up. I paid my own way, worked long hours and on much less than what these gravy train politicians get.

The vot...ing public deserve better than the likes of Hide, Harawira, Carter and partner and others. We're told to tightened our belts while they suck the system.

I've never had a $50K ten day holiday ... sounds good mind especially when other suckers pick up the tab.

Incidentally one of the Hotchkiss's seven deadly sins of narcissism is ‘Arrogance’. For those of you who work around forty hours a week and get to return to your families every night, consider this - our friend Rodney has worked tirelessly for the last one and a half decades to keep our ideological political views, and... the political party that represents our view, alive.

I was an Act party area coordinator for two early elections for the Act party and had the privilege of meeting some of their extraordinary people. The likes of Roger Douglas, Muriel Newman and Derek Quigley etc. All these people started their day in a different town with a breakfast presentation at 6:00 am and I never saw any of them back to their hotel before 11:00pm – day after day. Following the elections the pace never changes allowing no time to a personal life or personal relationship, especially in the smaller parties – all in the interests of representing us.

I realise that many execs get salaries of up to several million dollars. That, to me, just accentuates how out of whack our society is. Most of their salaries are built on that backs of people earning 15 bucks an hour. And I also realise Rodney was only doing what was allowed by the rules.

However, what he did, and what every politician is doing, is screwing the NZ taxpayer. They clearly have no conscience, and no concern for some nz families who are trying to live on the amount mps get for spending money. Meanwhile, they demand more taxes from us because the books arent balanced.

Its arrogance arrogance arrogance.... Read More

My concern is that if Rodney wasn't outed he would never have even apologised let alone paid it back. i can't imagine he had an epiphany one night and decided he'd done the wrong thing and went public himself.

Unfortunately he's in a position where once you stuff up it's a hrd road back. The apology smacks of getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar. And more unfortunate, he's in a catch 22. Even if his apology is genuine, the trust has already gone and it looks more like covering his ass. Perhaps he could come up with some way to really show his remorse.

It will be a hard road back, but I think the public like it when our MP's show humility and admit to making mistakes. It makes them more human and more like us. This is opposed to the slimy, fence sitting, and completely useless oxygen vampires that most of them are. ie Hone Harawira (I mean this guy can't even tie a tie right).

I was ... Read Moreprepared to write Rodney off before this apology, now I think he deserves a chance to prove, through his work, what a great change agent he can be. God knows this country needs it as apart from ACT the options are somewhat limited.

Shaggy Sheep

Shaggy Sheep Michael, I am sure Rodney will be able to turn it around once he realises that 'when you are in a hole, stop digging' and that 'absence makes the heart grow fonder'. Oh, and that a sense of entitlement is one of five criteria to qualify for a diagnosis of a narcissitic personality disorder

Dear Mr Shaggy, I have just been up north for the weekend and stopped in a petrol station on the way back to be greeted by the headline that Rodney also took his "girlfriend" to Hawaii. Your right when your in a hole stop digging, unfortunately Rodney has hit rock bottom and is still digging. And I am all for Narcisism, I dont call myself "... Read MoreKing Mike" for my royal heritage.

Rightly or wrongly Polictics is about perception and credibility. Rodney had this in spades until this recent fiasco. The crying shame is that government, both local and national is plagued with waste of money policy advisors, and administrative drones that wouldnt last 1 minute in a commerical environment. I had faith that with Act some efficiency and best practice would be introduced to an underwhelming, ineffective and expensive system of government. This I still believe in, Rodney however may as well join the rest of the Muppets that run this country.

Yes sad but true , I have lost all confidence in Rodney, and I have voted ACT since it was formed. NZ lost a hero yesterday.
Heres a tip for all the players out there. If you want to impress your hot young girlfriend, dont do it by taking my tax dollars and blowing it on a trip to London , thinly disguised as a fact... finding mission. "A fact finding trip" , get a grip! that is such a weak reason for a $50k junket that only labour supporters would be fooled by the real intent and purpose of the trip. Its insulting that a bloke I previously respected would think that the public would be dumb enough to swallow that one. Its sad but I don't think he can recover from this. Credibility Zero.Read More
