Rodney : --- I don't know about this, don't know why we need one mayor, perhaps just more cohesion in infrastructure and planning. Does one mayor really resolve all this? Would not a RTA resolve many issues.
and changes to RMA and building consents.

I think have 4 local council mayors, and then one is appointed as the entire regional mayor or chair with veto powers.
This mayor could be voted in or out by the other councilors.

Suzanne Weld

Suzanne Weld Rodney (good name that!), further to Cr Goudie's comments:
If the RC recommendations are accepted by the Government I have no doubt that Rodney District will become a unitary authority. Rodney DC has had its problems but as a councillor I know that my constituents do not see themselves as Aucklanders, and will resist being dictated to by Aucklanders in the context of the Royal Commission's recommendations. As a man with your own views, and with the substance to follow them through, I'm sure you'll understand that "Rodney" is not daunted by standing out and becoming a unitary authority. One of the reasons why people live in Rodney is that they don't want to be part of the masses and they enjoy Rodney's rural point of difference. They will not want an Auckland metrocentric council interfering with that - the ARC was bad enough in meddling in people's lives and dictating the district's future. What the RC recommends takes that even further, at the same time silencing the democratic voice

Michael Goudie

Michael Goudie One more thing .... this was initiated by a socialist govt. You have been such a ‘right wing’ politician for such a long time, and in my young political career I have admired you very much. So much so I have joined the National Party. A more right wing solution would be to do the Opposite. Downsize the proposed ‘superARC’, and let the reform of the RMA run its coarse. This will prove to be a solution that can be tweaked. Are we Blue or Red??

Suzanne Weld

Suzanne Weld I am a ratepayer in both Auckland and Rodney and I'm appalled at the Royal Commission's recommendations which will effectively diminish Aucklanders' voices on matters affecting them and their communities. I'm all for greater alignment so that Auckland can be driven towards the world-class city that it should be - but doing this at the expense (literally & figuratively) of those who live here is a scandal.
People are looking for a greater voice & ways to influence place-making for their communities. They will not tolerate being dictated to by an Auckland city-based, metro-centric decision-making machine run by a potentially ego-centric clown, elected at large.
We need to build on what we have - good local government; strip out the duplication at the regional level, and implement a more forward-thinking, centalised and intregrated infrastructure body for major roads and water services. There has been a lack of leadership in these areas, but why reinvent the whole wheel?

Michael Goudie

Michael Goudie Rodney,
I think you should check out my "Hibiscus Coast" facebook group to get a ‘feel’ for the reality that could be the new combined district. Link Below.

The recommendations are in direct conflict of some points of the “BlueGreen Vision for NZ” (pg24) to do with MUL’s. Also is in conflict of the recent National Policy Statement in relation with public transport.

Zane Taylor

Zane Taylor Dear Rodney,
It is vital to the people of Auckland and most importantly the people of Rodney and Franklin that they do not loose their political voice. The Royal comm recommendation is very leftist and without mandate, further Salmon had predetermined the outcome in a meeting I sat in on with (as a local body politician for Hibiscus Coast) the panel just 2 weeks into the Royal commission. the recommendation appears without mandate in Rodney, a blue blood constituency. Auckland aint broke; if it just got the infrastructure funding it required and the changes to the RMA (radical reduction of 3rd party right) and LGA reforms were allowed some life, abolish ARC & AKLs issues would disappear. Instead we risk a Homogenous region and people with a Metro Centric model, can you imagine such a boring city? I and my constituency appeal for your pragmatic government to reject the recommendation outright. The recommendation looks old, tired and socialistic even before it starts...please
