Michael Roper Tonight ( December 22 ) we tapped the latest offering from Brooklyn Brewery's Brewmaster's Reserve Series. Brewmaster Garrett Oliver went to the rural English village of Great Ryburgh where Crisp Maltings, one of the last traditional malters in the UK is located. He malted 19 tons of heirloom Maris Otter Barley the ol...d fashioned way, raking and plowing on the 150 year old stone floor by hand. After roasting in the kiln, he shipped it and some Fuggles hops to Brooklyn and brewed up "Backbreaker" a truly old school English Bitter. A bit stronger than most at 7% and a wee bit pricey at $8.50 a pint, it is a time machine beer. Pricey, because it's not cheap to ship 19 tons of malt! It has a subtle malt flavor balanced gently with the Fuggles. Very limited.

Michael Roper Monday night, December 14, at Hopleaf, John Dannerbeck and Dana Blum from Anchor Brewing Company will be in to share some Anchor Humming Ale. This special ale was brewed to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the the first brew at their present brewery. Using the rare Nelson Sauvin hop variety, it has an aroma and fla...vor as special as the occasion. We have all of this batch that is likely to be available in Chicago so join John, Dana, and me for a pint. We have Anchor Christmas Beer on tap as well.

Michael Roper Limb and Life, the "small beer" partener to the Sierra Nevada/Dogfish collaboration, Life and Limb, is on it's last leg. As of 3 PM Sunday, we have about 10 servings left. Now or never!

Michael Roper Life and Limb, a collaboration between Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada, featuring barley grown at Sierra Nevada founder, Ken Grossman's farm and maple syrup from the farm of Dogfish's founder, Sam Calagione along with some Alaska birch syrup is fantastic!!! We have only 10 gallons to pour so if you want to try it, get ...over to Hopleaf soon! There are only 350 barrels for the whole country of this wonderful beer.

Tomme Arthur's unique approach and creativity, along with his enthusiasm, helped produce a thriving beer scene in San Diego. Tomme brought a love for Belgian beer to the Port family of brew pubs and crea...ted their first Belgian style ale, Overhead Abbey Dubbel in 1997. That one Belgian style brew has since become an entire family of beers called The Lost Abbey. Tomme Arthur is certainly one of the most cutting edge brewers in the United States, and he continues to play a major role in the growth, education, and creativity of the American Craft Brewing scene. Outside of his multiple medals at World Beer Cup, Chicago Real Ale Festival, and the Great American Beer Festival, Tomme has brought a new passion to the rustic, old world traditions of Belgian brewing by creating new beers with a fresh new vision of what beer can be. The canvas for his artwork is imbued with oak, fruit, spices, wild yeast strains, and time.
