Hungry Ear Records We were interviewed on the resurgence of vinyl for the Windward Community College online newspaper. I come off sounding a little dorky but don't blame the reporter: I always sound like that. You know, I am poet, a visionary, a shaman, I can't tied down to the written word -- Okay, maybe I'm just a dork.

Dude, how come? I just bought four from my local shop. Stevie Wonder, James Brown, the Jack Johnson one... well, I guess I only got three. I'd say just keep it small and tight if you want my advice!!

I'm yust yoking. It's because I just said I was thinking of getting rid of the hip-hop section.

Remember how messed up the heavy metal t-shirt section used to get? I had to straighten that thing out constantly.

Hungry Ear Records A guy was asking me a question about record needles while chewing on a pen. He kept pointing at things with that pen. After awhile I could only watch the pen pointing, then going back to his mouth. Pen, mouth, pen, mouth. Gack.

Hungry Ear Records Thanks to all of you who have offered your support regarding our lease and possible move. We should have this issued resolved in the near future and promise to post the news here. At the moment we can say that we plan on staying in Kailua and the future looks very good!

Hungry Ear Records I'm thinking of getting rid of our Hip-Hop CD section. I wouldn't get rid of rap CDs; they'd just be mixed in with the Pop/Rock. I have to straighten out the Hip-Hop section several times a day where every other section needs cleaning only a couple times a week. And all that ever sells is Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and Bone Thugs n Harmony.

I'm not down with writing off a whole genre.
Here's an example of a hip hop song full of class consciousness and history that totally rocks out. To me bands like this mean so much more than a lot of the stuff out there, and it smacks of authenticity and lived experience. Not to discredit anyone, but since no one else seems interested in defending hip hop I thought I would. I'm just saying there are good groups in the genre.

Hungry Ear Records Ward knows his needles! A guy just brought in his turntable and asked if we had a new needle for it or could order one for him! So I (Dennie) gets Ward since he's the needle expert and knows our inventory. Ward takes one look at it and goes "it's a 213-D6C". Dennie: "Are you serious?" Ward: "Ummm yeah"

Mark says:

@Pam: Hi, Pam. What was it you and I and Kalani used to do at the house on Maluniu? Just kidding. Those were the days. Now I've got four little kids and one on the way. How about you? I don't have a working computer right now, but when I get back I'm gonna get it fixed. I'll write you then.

@Dennie: nice to hear from you. You look good, too.... See More

@Tom: Nice to know someone remembers me. I barely remember that time myself. :) Schenker still rocks!

Hungry Ear Records Hey, Mark Malia is back on the island visiting his mom through the beginning of December. he's not online but if you want to tell him anything, we'd be glad to relay the messages to him.

This picture is of Mark and Luke at Club Laimu, a now-defunct karaoke bar on Ward Avenue, is from May 1994. Mark was back visiting aft...er having left Hungry Ear 5-6 years before. Not visible on the other side of the table are Todd, Ward, and Dean Fujimoto (tih!).

On the back of the photo print mark wrote, "Luke, thanks for letting me grab onto your knee, it helped me get through this emotional part of the song."

Joey, Rod: Mark only got a chance to see your notes on the way out. I think he was very touched that so many people remember him. Thanks.

Rod: Don't worry, we're still trying to contact Marcus. I'll let you know as soon as we get something.

Hungry Ear Records Wishes everyone a Happy Halloween!

In honor of this day we share this bit of Hawai'i Halloween history with you. A ticket stub and contact sheet of photos from the R.E.M. Show on Halloween at Aloha Tower. Hat Makes the Man opened the show.

Contact sheet of photos by Dennie's brother, Vernon. Who else was at that memora...ble show? Any know of a set list from the show? I believe the only time r.e.m. Has played in Hawai'i?
