Vikram Nair

Vikram Nair Hello,
I am considering applying to MBA programs for 2011 intake. What would be your opinion on taking a Kaplan GMAT prep course? Also, I was recently at a HBS MBA info session that mentioned that they were one of two programs in the world that used the Case Method in classrooms- would Ivey be the other?

Thank you,
Vikram

Hi Vikram - great to hear about your interest in Ivey and that you're doing your research on other schools as well. As for taking a GMAT Prep course, this is entirely up to the individual. I think many people find it useful for preparation, and probably a good confidence booster in knowing exactly what to expect. The average person studies ... See Moreappoximately 100 hours for the GMAT, so that gives you an idea of the preparation involved! And yes - Ivey is the other business school in the world whose MBA program is case-based. While many business schools may use case studies to supplement learning, HBS and ours are predominantly case-based.

Shiven Bhardwaj

Shiven Bhardwaj Hi, I am considering applying for 2011 intake. I would like to know i Ivey offers scholarships to International students ?

If yes, (1) What is the assessment Critera ?

(2) What are the terms of the scholarship (amount of reward, any bond etc. ) ?

On a separate note, does Ivey allow CFA charterholders to get exemptions from any modules ?

Hi Shiven - scholarship allotments range anywhere from $5000 to full tuition. Awards and scholarships are generally based solely on merit and the quality of a candidate's entire application (work experience, leadership skills and experience, GMAT, etc.) About 50% of the class gets some kind of funding.
We do not provide any exemptions for CFA charterholders or other professional designations.

Business-school applicants have to juggle their real-world work and family commitments with GMAT-taking, tedious applications and dozens of essays. It can be difficult to figure out when to apply—and when to tell the boss you might be leaving. Here's how to handle M.B.A. application season:
Gaurav Goel

Gaurav Goel I have some queries regarding the Full Time MBA curriculum:

--What are the specializations on offer?

--Is a non-financial background, hindrance to getting an admission in Ivey?

--Does one get help for switching to Finance? Is it advisable, keeping in mind the internships and job requirements of Pre-MBA experience in Finance?

Hi Gaurav - we are a General Management MBA program but we do offer six different areas for career-focused electives/specializations. You can find more details at www.ivey.uwo.ca/mba/learning/electives_streams.htm. A non-financial background is no hindrance at all - we are looking for diversity in educational background and experience. We offer ... See Moreoptional Pre-Ivey programming that students can take to get some of the core business basics down. We have many students switch careers successfully, but it all depends how much work you are willing to put in, and how you choose to work with the Career Management team to achieve your goal. They are an excellent resource and can help you determine the best way to position your skills/experience for a job in Finance. But, you have to come prepared having done some research on what these firms are looking for as well. Hope that helps!

Recently we talked to a new client who just went through a rough Round 1 of the MBA admissions process. Although the round isn't over yet, the way his interview invitations are going, it looks like he's not going to have much success. Once he saw the writing on the wall, he came to us for help.

Lokesh Dhar I had a couple two questions:

1) In the selection process, is our GMAT score looked at in its entirety, or do you look at the breakdown for the scores we got for each of the three sections

2) If we already have a Masters in a field related to management will our graduate work/grades be looked at more closely than our undergraduate

1. A bit of both. We generally consider the GMAT score in its entirety, but we look at the breakdown of scores as well to see the balance between sections.
2. We only consider your last two years of marks when calculating the average.
Hope that helps!
