TIPS & CLIPS - Right Brain/Left Brain
My final installment on the brain is a link to the AMAZING talk by Jill Bolte Taylor who experienced a stroke in the left side of her brain. As a brain researcher she provides incredible insight into why EACH component is so important to who we are and ...... who we will ourselves ...to be. Which of course impacts the stories we tell and screenplays we write!! Enjoy.....

TED Talks Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions -- motion, speech, self-awareness -- shut down one by one. An astonishing story.

Wordsmythe.ca WORDSMYTHE.ca - TIPS & CLIPS series. Wordsmythe.ca exists because I believe that screenwriting is a craft, like good cooking, that you can master if you’re willing to take the time. But, like chef school, you will need to practice and refine and often times empty out your sauce pan - give it a good scrub and start ...again. Good storytelling, like good food, takes time!

Wordsmythe.ca part #1 Let's start the process with an assessment of the natural tools we bring to the process. The most important tool we have is our brain. The human brain is composed of two major processing centers, the left and the right hemispheres. What does the structure of the brain have to do with good storytelling? I’m GLAD you asked.

Wordsmythe.ca part #2 The RIGHT brain is where our feelings of community, caring, emotions and imagination originate. The LEFT brain is where our desire for structure, rationality, and order originate. Two very different functions, yet each is important in creating a great screenplay. With screenwriting we take a creative idea (im...agination) and pour it into a very specific mold (the script format).

Wordsmythe.ca #3 Screenwriting is very similar to writing sonnets (Shakespeare) or haiku (Matsuo Basho). Each has a very specific format, which enlivens the reading (and the writing) of it. Each form, pushes the writer to find their best phrase, the best words, in the telling of their story. Step up to being tested; begin your ...dream of writing today. Proceed to the discussion page - comments and answers THERE please.
