j fergeson gallery invites you to join us for our Holiday Open House, Saturday December 5, from 10:30-5:00 pm with a special reading by Virginia writers Anna Cox and Hannah Huber starting at 5:00.
Give the gift of art this year from featured local artists. Stocking stuffers will be available for purchase including gift ...books, stationary, jewelry and small works.
ANNA COX is an assistant professor and director of the photography program at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. She is an award winning visual artist who exhibits her work nationally and internationally in cities such as New York, Chicago and Toronto. Anna is currently working on a book about women's relationships to their beds. Her writing has been published in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Anna will be reading from P.S.: What I didn’t Say, a collection of letters from BFFs to Frenemies, from The One Who Got Away to The One You Wish Would Go Away. The letters in this collection will make you laugh out loud, sob quietly into your cereal, and above all make you appreciate, celebrate, and examine the females in our lives.
Hannah Huber lives and writes in Richmond, VA. Her fiction has been published in the Potomac Review and the Press 53 Anthology, Home of the Brave; Stories in Uniform. She was a 2008 Pushcart Prize Nominee.
Hannah will be reading excerpts from Home of the Brave, a collection of military related stories featuring authors such as Kurt Vonnegut and Tim O’Brien. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book go to USA Cares, a non-profit serving veterans and their families. For each book purchased this evening, Hannah will be sending a copy to a soldier overseas.

Please join us Saturday, November 21 for the opening of Jeremy Satterlund's new exhibition, Grounded Equation.
Using eco-friendly materials, Satterlund makes his own painting surfaces, hand-sanding the edges on a slight back bevel to amplify surface area and increase the resonance of the picture plane. He constructs som...e surfaces as shallow, sealed boxes containing drawings and bits of charcoal.
Satterlund begins his paintings by building up various elements of collage and mixed media. Mechanical diagrams, architectural plans, personal drawings, and notes are the keys to his imagery. After selecting the images, he places them on the studio floor in a loosely perpendicular arrangement. Satterlund allows for accidents, sometimes even rigging them to happen by using his collage elements as a drop cloth to catch runoff from the painting process. Selected pieces of this paper floor eventually become embedded into a painting.
Oil paint, thinner, resin, and wax are mixed together and poured on or applied with a laminate scraper, brush, syringe, or squirt bottle until the surface is covered or formed into a simple frame or square. Scorching the surface with heat achieves nuanced capillary effects that create the illusion of depth. Sometimes a ruler and knife edge are required to cut in precise shapes or remove paint.
Satterlund’s goal is to say something unexpectedly meaningful by cycling through his process until text, texture, and color reveal themselves beneath luminous layers of resin and wax.
