I have recently been revelling in Christopher Smart’s poem ‘For my Cat Jeoffrey’. You can find this on http://people.zeelandnet.nl/henklensen/s
Smart was in the madhouse when he wrote this, and it shows. But this gives the piece a freedom rarely found in poetry of that era. It also makes it hard to take at one g...o: I have it pinned to my office wall so I can dip in and out as the mood takes me. Such lines as ‘He purrs in thankfulness, when God tells him he’s a good cat’ and ‘He can spraggle upon waggle’ seem to me flashes of genius, filled with such love.Read More
