John Kitzhaber One thing I propose in my Education Plan is to develop a new Oregon high school diploma that means students are prepared to enroll in post-secondary education without remediation. Read more about my proposal for transforming primary and secondary education, and let me know what you think.

www.johnkitzhaber.com
In order to successfully transform Oregon’s economy, we must make it possible for more Oregonians than ever before to attain higher levels of education.

Maybe I should expand on the above. The school I attended was an inner-city school. It prided itself on retention of it's students, and on having 80-90% of it's graduates going into further education or into a job. Some of my classmates in the academic program did not go to college--usually for financial reasons--but they seem to have had successful lives.

I am a school board member in the Three River School Dist., a rural district in Southern Oregon.

I think it important that a student leave high school prepared to attend college, should they choose to.

I also think that the idea of "college" should be seen as continued education, rather than necessarily a4 year college or university. I do though, believe to be most successful in today's world, one needs some form of education beyond a high school diploma. The military also provides those opportunities, should one choose that route. ... See More

If a person is to go on to work with their hands, their heads, or a combination of both and be succesful, they will need education beyond high school, in today's world, in my opinion.

John Kitzhaber This Saturday is the statewide Drug Turn-In Day. Traces of prescriptions drugs are now being found in our waterways and we need to dispose of prescription drugs safely and in an environmentally friendly way. To learn more about why and how you can dispose of prescription drugs you are not using, please visit the Oregon Environmental Council website.

Recent studies have found that an overwhelming majority of our rivers and streams have traces of pharmaceuticals in them, and that these pharmaceuticals can cause harm to fish populations. Please join me in supporting the Oregon Environmental Council's campaign to keep pharmaceuticals out of rivers.

When I worked as an administrator at a senior living facility, they would dispose of narcotics by making them into a paste and fluch them down the toilet. John Kitzhaber Increasing the speed and scope of investments in energy efficiency in homes, buildings and industry is a strategy to create jobs in the near-term while saving Oregonians money over the long-term. This money can then be invested back in our communities. Click to read more in my Jobs plan about how we can move this forward, and tell me what you think.

What I don't like about nuclear power, besides the long term radiation risks, is that it centralizes power, and creates very few jobs relative to what alternative energies and conservation efforts would do.

Angelia, Are you asking me if the law about 14 year old is on the books and enforced in Oregon? If so, yes, it is true, at least it was a few years ago. Unless it has been changed, if your child runs the law cannot help you get them back. Mine ran. The law would not help. We were told if we could locate the child the police could ask the child to ... See Morereturn but could not retun the child to our parental custody. We were advised by a very polite and caring but ckearly frustrated policeman that if we took the child against its will that we must be very careful not to even put a red mark on the skin or we could be prosecuted. We did finally locate and "take" our child back and proceeded to get the medical and mental help that was needed. We didn't give up. The child is grown now and is still recovering from being a high school drop-out. I am now raising another child who is 14 years old. I want to come back to Oregon which to me is the most beautiful place I have ever lived in but not with a 14 year old child to finish raising. I doubt that most Oregon parents knowthat the law exists until they have the difficulty that teaches them by experience. We learned the same way. This is the only issue I have addressed with John Kitzhaber and I have in no way blamed him for the existance of this law. I simply wanted to inform him that I believe it needs changed. Thank you for your polite comments.

The State of Oregon and the City of La Pine lost a dear friend yesterday when State Treasurer Ben Westlund lost his battle with cancer.Ben helped us as a new city to secure a loan of $50,000.00 to get started. Senator Westlund invited us to Salem were He walked right up to the Governor and stuck his finger in the Governors back and said, Governor, the Mayor shouldn’t have to use his own money to pay for a phone line at city hall. Ah, Ben's humor. To Mr. Westlund's family, May God Bless you all.

If I understand this, you are asking the home owner to upgrade their home at a time when they hardly have enough money to live on. As I see it, it is like say, I am going to downsize to a Honda Accord to a Honda Civic to save gas. The money that I save on gas will help pay off the car loan. Bad idea!

John Kitzhaber Here is an important story from today that highlights the failure of the punitive No Child Left Behind approach to change in schools. Using standardized testing to form judgments or evaluations of the effectiveness of schools or teachers is wrong-headed and counter-productive. I have been very clear that teacher perfor...mance cannot be captured by a student's score on a standardized test.

John Kitzhaber In response to a question on income taxes on our ideas site: I think there are a series of steps we are going to have to take to reform our system of public finance. The first is to modify the 2% kicker to give us the ability to create a fairly robust emergency fund to level out these fluctuations that we have due to o...ur narrow income tax base. Secondly, we need to think about how we can reduce our reliance on the income tax and broaden that tax base.

Sales tax is regressive. It most effects those with the least amount of expendable income.

New Hampshire had no sales or income tax when I lived therein the mid-70s. I didn't pay property tax on my car, either. I'm not sure where their tax money came from.

the campaign: Yesterday the Oregonian reported on the latest survey on
the governor's race which finds Kitzhaber leads either of the
Republicans, 45 percent to 33 percent.

The latest survey is from Portland pollster Bob Moore, who often works for Republicans. He matched up former Gov. John Kitzhaber - who Moore judges to be the strongest of the Democratcs - against two Republican contenders, ex-Trail Blazer Chris Dudley and businessman Allen Alley.
