In short: Nothing on the neck or head. You can have visible tattoos on your arms, but it cannot be offensive. The Chief of Police has the final determination in what is "offensive"

Manuel Pelaez

Manuel Pelaez Hi, I was wondering... Will the department most likely offer an expedited process for out-of-state applicants when the next test dates are available? and also, do I have to be "already in the process" to request a ride along?

We will absolutely offer an expedited process for those out of town. As for a RideAlong, all you need to do is go to your nearest precinct and fill out a form and submit it. It can take up to a month at this point because of how many requests we receive. But be patient-- its worth the wait/experience.

Joshua Key Are y'all currently hiring lateral officers? When is the next test date? How long does the entire hiring process take?

We are hiring folks that have already begun the process, but we do not plan on having another testing cycle until early 2010. At this point, Lateral officers must apply at the same time as Entry level applicants. However, we do process Laterals quicker. The length of the entire process certainly depends on a lot of variables- but it is much shorter for Laterals.

Mark Link Is there still a Reserve Acadamy in the Clackamas area, or is the Portland Reserve training done somewhere else? Thanks!

Mark, unfortunately I do not know the answer to that question. I will have to check with Officer Price to find that out.

Mark- per Officer Price, Clackamas is the only Academy that PPB is using for the Reserve Program.

Hi Abigail- if your goal is to become a Probation Officer, I would contact Parole and Probation- the Portland Police Bureau only hires full time sworn officers to answer 911 calls. I don't know if it would be worthwhile for you to begin a possible year long process with us to turn around and get hired elsewhere. Possibly an internship to learn more?

All of the backgrounds from the July 09 test have been issued, but it will be a few months before we see how many hires we have from that list.

We have pre-test workshops we offer before each written test. The workshops will cover oral boards and the goal is to make applicants more knowledgable in what the expecations are. Stay tuned. We don't know when our next test is, so we aren't sure when we will have any more workshops until then.

Not if you plan on going full time in the near future. The process is identical, but if you are halfway with the Reserves and the full time test begins, you have to withdraw and begin the ENTIRE process over again. If you are interested in the Reserves for the experience and you want to devote 2 years to the program, I would say it would worth it. Otherwise, hold off until we have another full time test.

To my knowledge, the initial application for Reserves is very short. It is just to get you in the door and registered for the written test. You will be required to fill out the SPH as Entry Level and Lateral applicants do.

If you have any questions regarding the essay, I would contact Officer Price (Reserve/Cadet Coordinator)- 503-823-4857- I am unfamiliar with the essay and do not want to give you bad info.
