Hi Jon, Came across your artwork of the girl in the shadows and couldn't help but think of how much it reminds me of artwork I do. I am not sure what technique you are using. I think I understand it is a computer image, am I wrong? The technique I use is White charcoal on black canson, or similar but sometimes differen...t colored papers . It is freehand drawing though, no computer. I am giving you the link to see what I am referring to. Whatever technique you use, I like it! I will post it next.Read More

Actually, only part of "Girl in the Shadows" made use of the computer. Like any drawing, it's drawn with pencil/graphite on white paper -- at least to start with. Usually, the lighter areas remain the white of the paper, while the drawn areas serve as the shadows and dark areas of the drawing. "Girl in the Shadows", however, takes a twist on that ... Read Moremethod. I drew the areas that would eventually be white, but on white paper. As a result, the final drawing made little sense. It didn't look like the girl at all.

But when I took that strange drawing, scanned it into my computer, and then digitally inverted it, the white paper areas became black, and the areas drawn in pencil became white. The result is the "Girl in the Shadows" artwork you are familiar with.

In other words, I drew the portrait in reverse. I drew the negative image, and inverted it.

Jon Baas Designs is curious. As we get closer to Christmas, where do you like to do most of your gift shopping? In the mall? At specific stores? Online?
