LONDON — A United Airlines pilot was pulled from a plane and arrested shortly before takeoff after a co-worker suspected him of being drunk, police and air officials said Tuesday.

I am just reading this posting and everyone's comments and it's sad to me that no one person has mention anything about Alcoholism as a disease. People, face it, we work in a profession (yes Mr. Tilton, it's still a profession) that's very stressful in many ways. Both Pilots and Flight Attendants have lives that have had to face many challenges in ... Read Morethe past 8 years and some have hit bottom hard in many different ways, say financial, emotional, marriages broken, houses lost, and ADDICTION AND ALCOHOLISM IS VERY REAY BETWEEN US and many of us are not facing the facts that some drink way too much. One or two beers for one person means 6-8 beers after for another. i've seen it in layovers one to many times. We need to support each other on this. If you don't know how to do this, inform yourselves about it by asking what can be done to help someone who might have a pills or drinking problem. Let's not judge, lets learn about this and help. IT is real, Alcoholism/addiction is between us. Many pilots drink, many flight attendants drink. We all know the stories.

With all due respect, Enrique, not all crew members get slammed with liquor and try to fly a Boeing 747 full of passengers or assume their flight attendant duties. Addictions in this environment are no different then in the "real" world. Take it from a guy who was in the Navy for ten years, the corporate world for 10 years. Our demons just happen to happen in foreign cities and hotel layovers.

Well I see the pilots have applied to have their certifications reinstated. I think it is funny that they have made the Urban Dictionary...Northwest Nap~when you sleep so deeply that you can't be awakened by ATC, chimes, cell phones, or fighter jets!

As planes get more packed and checking luggage gets more expensive, stowing carry-on bags is starting to look like The Amazing Race.

Was told the other day what would take care of this problem {by a 1K no less}....1st bag free to check, charge for all carry on rollerboards....there would be an exponential drop in bags brought on and a whole lot less drama. So of course, United would never agree to this!

The company messed up on this policy...it should be, charge for carry ons and maybe we wouldn't have to do 150 announcements about how to store their bags and then check what doesn't fit...another "well thought out" policy (NOT!)
