Kala Art Institute
Alex Benedict began working through Kala Art Institute eight years ago to fully explore a process of juxtaposing digital photographic images with his poetry. The physical enjoyment of working with presses led to further study in intaglio, monotype, and other means of creating an interaction of concepts with a variety o...f media. His current project involves large scale printing on canvas of images which are a result of operations of formal geometry and probability, color, and perception. The process of generating and manipulating the images engages Alex’s knowledge of mathematics, computer science and digital photography.

Nancer Le Moins has been teaching art in the Bay Area for 20 years and is especially interested in community based and activist art. She has been an artist in residence at Kala for 10 years and works primarily as a printmaker and painter. Her work for the past few years has been motivated by environmental and social issues but remains solidly personal. Nancer will be showing slides from several recent series and discussing the fine line between getting a point across with grace and beauty and not being didactic.

Kala Art Institute
Gallery Reception: December 10, 2009 – February 27, 2010
Artists’ Conversation: Saturday, January 30, 2010, 2:00 pm
The Harrisons in conversation with an
introduction by critic and art historian Peter Selz
The Kala Art Institute is extremely honored to welcome Helen Mayer Harrison and
Newton Harrison to the Kala Gallery wit...h a major exhibition of their work titled
Green House Britain. For nearly forty years, the collaborative team of Newton and
Helen Mayer Harrison has been internationally respected as visionary pioneers of
the eco-art movement. Often referred to simply as “The Harrisons”, the pair has
worked closely with biologists, ecologists, architects and urban planners to
explore ideas and solutions that support both biodiversity and community
development. The Harrison's expansive practice embraces a range of disciplines
that often casts them in the roles of historians, diplomats, ecologists, investigators,
emissaries and art activists. Presented in an art-viewing context, The Harrisons’
works features extensive mapping, text panels, models, digital animations and
audio-visual presentations. Far from dryly didactic, their impassioned works serve
as both a meditation on global ecology and also as a futuristic vision for
environmental change and recovery. The Harrisons’ previous projects have
focused on watershed restoration, urban renewal, agriculture and forestry issues
among others. Global warming has been a central concern in their work since
1974, placing the team years ahead of the curve regarding environmental issues.
Their boldly visionary projects have often led to changes in governmental policy
and have expanded dialogue around previously unexplored issues leading to
practical implementations throughout the United States and Europe.Read More

Kala:
Located in what used to be the Heinz Factory with architecture Julia Morgan had a hand in designing, this vast open gallery offers an exceptional view of the show. Because of its incredible size, this only night in Berkeley performance can accommodate over one hundred patrons, even allowing a few lucky audience members the opportunity get up close and personal and sit right in the middle of the action. Don't worry though-you wont be pulled on stage. Some even say a hint of ketchup still lingers in the air...
