We were in the hospital with my son most of the weekend. He had his first (and hopefully last) anaphylactic allergic reaction. We aren't sure from what at this time but I'm terrified to go anywhere now or try anything new. He had a tiny bit of garlic in his squash, besides that we were somewhere where other kids wer...e and I'm thinking maybe someone had touched a toy with peanut butter and he put the toy in his mouth. Anyone have any suggestions for future? Should I avoid church nursery, gym nursery, playgroups, etc. I want him to play with other kids but now I'm terrified!! He could have died. We were in 2 ambulances, 2 hospitals and he was admitted to Children's Hospital. It was just awful. Thanks for any suggestions and help you can provide me.Read More

It's so scary to think how quickly they can go from being perfectly fine to a major medical emergency. My daughter has milk and soy allergies; we were told to avoid nuts and peanuts for now (eventhough she hasn't been tested yet); she's okay with eggs and wheat (thankfully). I take her to the grocery store and I take her to restaurants. I usually ... Read Moretake her some food if we go to a restaurant unless I know that they have something that is safe. I always wipe down the grocery cart with a baby wipe and I always wipe down high chairs and tables (I do this for sanitation reasons as well as her allergies). I made an allergy folder that I give to anyone who is in charge of taking care of her (it has a hidden ingredient list; a list of safe foods at restaurants and other safe foods, our phone numbers as well as her doctor's phone number; and an emergency action plan (I think I found it on the FAAN website). The emergency action plan is important because it lists possible symptoms and what to do in case she has a reaction. The lady who heads up the nursery at our church was great and when we had our meeting with all nursery workers she let me speak to the group about my daughter's allergies and let me give a demo on how to use the epi-pen. We also have pagers that medical professionals at our church are given in case of a medical emergency. I would let any nurses, doctors, or first responders at your church know about your child's allergies and let them know where you keep your epi-pen. I think when people hear you give your story about having to take your child to the hospital that they will take you seriously will be very cautious. However, I am still hesitant to use young babysitters because I know that they need to be able to use the epi-pen without hesitation (just in case). Having a food allergic child definitely has its challenges and there are a lot of myths surrounding food allergies so everyone needs to know that it won't just make your child a little sick but it is something that is life threatening.

Thank you soooo much for all of your insights. I'm going to see if I can set up a meeting like this with some people at church as well. And we definitely are going to get the Allergy Action Plan (I've heard of this). For now I'm going to make it up on my own, I'm also hearing that its good to have the doctor write one up. I knew he had severe ... Read Moreallergies but I don't think any of us knew to the extent. It's comforting to know there are others out there going through the same thing. Samia My daughter's first birthday is coming up in a few months. Does anyone have recommendations for bakeris in the Long Island area that make wheat free and egg free cakes?

Hi Samia. I don't know about bakeries in the Long Island area but, your best bet may be making a cake from scratch or using a mix. Cherrybrook Kitchen makes a really good wheat & egg free cake as does Betty Crocker.

they did a blood test on my daughter at 6 months to test for allergies. Her brother has milk and egg allergies. The Ped had me go milk, egg and peanut free the first 6 months of nursing her. After he allergy test at 6 months she came back negative and I was able to add back all foods. Good luck.

Roxanne, food diary is the best way. My DS2 had negative SPT but can't tolerate dairy, egg, soy, wheat, chicken, banana or rice. Took months and a food diary but he's doing great now! And it's totally worth the effort (I will probably cry when I get to have cheese again! LOL) when you see your little one feeling good.

You can message me if you want more info/support.

What color food dye? Yellow #5 has been known to cause adverse reactions. I am sorry your two year old had a reaction. Did you go to an ER or the doctor? That sounds like a serious reaction. Does she have any history of allergic reactions?

Amy Branum, a health statistician for the U.S. Centers for Disease

at an alarming rate in the US. The study authors aren't sure if the

I agree with Lori. There is so much more chemicals and additives along with preservatives and pesticides in this day and age. Things are processed differently now then they were when we were kids. A good 30 years ago plus.

I agree with Terra. I ate very organic/unprocessed throughout my entire pregnancy ....I was breastfeeding my son when we quickly learned that he had milk/soy intolerance and, because of that, I avoided all processed food and allergens. when he started on solids he ate only Earth's Best organic baby food ....at 15 months he has a severe reaction to peanut butter after blood work showed negative ...and he is also allergic to eggs.

It depends on what you're looking for. There are lots of them out there - from "mainstream" places like amazon.com (it's best to know if you "like" stuff before getting, because it's by the case, but pricewise, very good), and then specialty places that are geared toward specific allergies (ie, peanutfreeplanet.com has things that are more than "just" PN free, but that's their main slant, while glutenfreemall.com has things that are all GF but some are also free of other things.

My oldest has a moderate egg/wheat allergy, but my youngest has a severe peanut/tree nut/milk/egg allergy, and mild wheat. With the addition of all nuts and milk I am now at the beginning stages of the learning curve again. I'm specifically looking for some crackers, baked goods, etc., if possible, that I could use as introductory foods. If ... Amazon also has a lot of allergy friendly foods. Try Enjoy Life Foods, Namaste items, Cherrybrook Kitchen, Pamela's Products, EnerG products. Go to Amazon.com and search for wheat free foods or peanut free foods. Hope that helps.

I bought a box of Duncan Hines yellow cake mix at the store. It lists that it only contains wheat. I also looked all over the box to see if it was processed in a plant with milk, peanuts or tree nuts. I heard that manufactures are not obligated to list if it is processed on the same line as an allergan is this true? ... Does anyone have advice for this and do you think this cake mix would be safe for my son, who has milk, peanut and tree nut allergies?Read More

I know Duncan Hines icing is not safe. Made in the same facility as peanuts/tree nuts. I use Betty Crocker or Pillsbury. Oh, but your son has milk allergys? IDK about that. My son is PN/TN/Egg

I think that is safe. Pam - I have been wondering the same thing. I don't think so since I have found kosher parve products that have that in it. That means no milk protein, I am 99% sure of it.

Hi Everybody! I recall reading a question here from someone who had a child allergic to peanuts but not tree nuts, and were asking about a company offering tree nuts in which they didn't have cross-contamination with peanuts. I have a daughter whose allergic to peanuts and not to tree nuts. I had thought about growing ...my own nut trees but if she developed a tree nut allergy I would be bummed I had planted nut trees in the backyard. Anyway, how about this solution: Purchase your tree nuts, when possible, in the hard outer shell. Wash the outer shell and crack the nuts yourself. Does that sound to labor intensive or a little "nutty"? I am thinking about doing that.Read More

i was able to find walnuts and almonds at our local grocery store that had a label noting that they were packaged in a "gluten free and peanut free facility." my kiddo loves them! we decided to give him tree nuts because he is allergic to so many other foods that his diet was already severely restricted, and we wanted to put as many things into it that he "could" eat!
