Breast cancer is strong, but the students and faculty of The Hebrew Day School are stronger. Throughout the month of October, the entire school will find ways to support breast cancer awareness and research. Take a walk through the halls of HDS and you will see students and teachers alike sporting pink hair strands. ... All of the proceeds of these colorful locks go towards breast cancer research. In addition, with a small donation, the students were recently able to participate in a casual day and take a break from their regular school uniform. Everyone’s contributions helped to raise $1,000 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. Another exciting activity was posing for a school-wide picture on the first Friday of the month. All students and faculty were invited to wear pink on this day to show their support of the cause and then had the opportunity to have their photo snapped.
Supporting breast cancer is near and dear to those at HDS. Last spring, Angel Kavanaugh, the school’s office manager was diagnosed with the disease. Also, Lynne Shefsky, HDS’s Head of School is a breast cancer survivor. Not to mention the many people near and dear to the HDS family that breast cancer has affected. The school felt it important to raise awareness of this disease, as well as teach its students the important lessons of compassion and Tzedakah.
The Hebrew Day School still has limited spaces available for the 2009-2010 school year. For more information or to arrange a private tour, contact Susan Cohen, Director of Admissions, at 407-647-0713, or visit the school’s comprehensive website at www.hds-orlando.org.
