The Majestic

The Grates are a three-piece band from Brisbane, Australia, comprising Patience Hodgson (vocals), John Patterson (guitar) and Alana Skyring (drums) formed in 2002. They have been lauded for their catchy songs and enthusiastic and energetic live show (Patience spends much of the show bouncing around, even while singing).... They are frequently described as fun: “We just wanna have fun and hope other people do too.” (Patience). Their sound has been compared to the Ramones, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Be Your Own Pet. In March 2006 they played at the South by Southwest trade music fair in Texas.

The band has a distinctive style. All three members have a background in art and they design their own album artwork, posters, t-shirts and even socks.
They released an array of limited edition recordings (The Grates EP(2002), Black Dog Black Dog(2003), Pyrate Kids(2003) and Crocodile(2003)) before releasing what is referred to as their debut EP, The Ouch. What’s so special about Funk Night? First off, it’s the biggest party in the D! It’s guaranteed to be packed with people ready to dance all night. Second, we got Detroit’s own Frank Raines DJing nothing but raw funk 45s all night-REAL VINYL ALL NIGHT. Frank, aka The Soul Controller, is known to throw down the best music where ever he goes. Last, we have the Will Sessions Band! Will Sessions (the Few Records/Funk Night Records) brought you the legendary Guilty Simpson Big Band, Phat Kat Big Band, and The Black Milk Big Band performances that filled the Magic Stick in 2009. Members of Will Sessions have recorded with Black Milk, Slum Village, Mayer Hawthorne, Buff1, 14kt, Mary J Blidge, etc...

In 2002, From First to Last was formed by guitarist Matt Good and Travis Richter in their hometown of Valdosta, Georgia. Eventually a solid lineup was formed, with vocalist Philip Reardon, guitarist Richter, guitarist Good, bassist Joey Antillon and drummer Derek Bloom. In 2003 The band released the EP Aesthetic on Fou...r Leaf Recordings. At the time, Bloom had been with the band a few weeks and most of the singing was done by Good and Richter as they had provided vocals since the band had formed, where Reardon provided the screaming.
