Neat experiment. I remember several years ago reading about an experiment which actually used fire as a speaker, not just to visualize sound but produce it. By using a wick dipped in a chemical (sorry forget what actual ingredients were used) and burning it to create the flame, the person inserted two electrodes into the flame from a high voltage... Read More transformer being driven via an audio amplifier. If I recall correctly, this created a plasma within the flame which in turn was able to reproduce the audio source.

What about visualizing the frequency spectrum by using an array of gas selenoids tuned to different frequencies by using capacitor filters (equalizer) and a microcontroller filtering the music waveform to specific frequencies and converting the volume of the bandwidth to how open the corresponding selenoid should be? Or should I just shut up now : )
