Make Poverty History Canada

Make Poverty History Canada Very little progress was made at the G8 meeting in L'aqila, Italy in July, 2009. This is partly because the host country, Italy, wasn't particularly interested in fighting poverty. This is a reminder of how important it is for Canadians to push our government, who is hosting the G8 in 2010, to work fo rsolutions to poverty.

'many of these rich countries'as you say dear Jennifer still have homeless people and haven't gotten a grip on their health and education systems.
Since 'charity begins at home',shouldn't there be zero tolerance for poverty and all the ills it brings to society at home first before making pledges to help countries that aren't as well off?

Make Poverty History Canada We are just three weeks away from a critical meeting of the G8 in Italy. With the global financial crisis hitting poor nations hard, leaders of the world’s 8 richest countries must live up to their promises to help the world’s poorest. Poverty is as much a part of society as soicety itself. Can poverty be defeated? no not quite, there is more to poverty than not having food sheler and clothing. It is a mindset which is much harder to deal with

So long as the World Bank, the UN, and other prominent global institutions accept poverty as some unavoidable scurge on this planet we will continue to see this issue raise its' head. A basic income should be guaranteed to all - sufficient to cover the expense of housing, food and basic necessities of life anywhere.
When people feel less threatened, when their basic needs are met, they are better able to pursue the finer aspects of human life.
