Maria Montessori Holiday topic of discussion: Is it necessary to lie to our children about Santa Claus?

www.alfiekohn.org
When my daughter was about three, she had a mad crush on Clifford the Big Red Dog. You can imagine her delight when she spotted a six-foot Clifford greeting children at a fair one afternoon. She dashed ...

I never told my children about Santa Claus or the Christkind (in Austria) bringing the presents. They are fine with it. Even though my son tends to tell all the children now (he is )) because he says "HOw can parents want their children to lesrn and then they lie at them?"
I try to tell him, that we have to respect other ideas. It is very hard for him...

Our primary trainer suggested we be true and brief: "Many people enjoy thinking about Santa Claus."

Our older daughter never believed and just classified Christmas as one of those things that people had their own traditions about; our younger daughter (raised the same way with the same traditions) believed fervently until 10, and was quite angry to find out the truth. So much depends on the individual child (like in every other situation!)

Maria Montessori Interesting video about Montessori as a preparation for a capitalist entrepreneurial society with Dr. Jerry Kirkpatrick, author of "Montessori, Dewey and Capitalism”

Really... people out there are loving this? I loathe it! Did you actually listen to it? Not only is he arguing that Montessori's approach prepares children to participate in a capitalist or entrepreneurial environment (which I would not disagree with), but then he goes a step further to advocate for a "free market for education with entreprenurial ... See Morecapitalists running the schools" ?! How, exactly, would children be permitted to develop into their full and unknown potential in schools run in this manner? And what makes us think that this would be in children's best interests- allowing "entreprenurial capialism" into school cafeterias, for example, has worked so well ;) Capitalism is great for incentivising short-term returns, not long-term investments (it is antithetical to her approach).

Aren't private schools run by entrepreneurial capitalists? And aren't most Montessori schools private? The US government has done little (if anything) to further the spread of the Montessori movement, and has done everything in its power to oppose it. It's all been left to private enterprise. Of course, not all entrepreneurs are created the same, and they have different motives...

I am proud to say that the "admissions test" at a Montessori school is being a human child.

and yet, as Dr Montanaro always said during training after describing some 'wrong' that is popularly practiced theses days -
" ...but, we must remain optimistic" - and continue our work. True! Hard sometimes, but true.

Maria Montessori This article made me laugh out loud a few times! It gives a great perspective on how the "overparenting" phenomenon has grown in our culture. As Montessorians, we are taught to observe each child and then put them in touch with what they need - if only we could teach these hyper parents to do the same!

www.time.com
Overparenting got way out of control in the past generation. But now a band of rebels is trying to restore some balance and sanity to family life and help bring all those anxious helicopter parents down for a soft landing

Maria Montessori I love seeing the result when children in the Primary classroom start to write with the moveable alphabet. This child decided to write about his favorite types of candy! Oh - and for those of you less familiar with Montessori - we guide the child to spell phonetically at this age (in this case 4). More on that to come in a future video!

I have fond memories of Montessori as a child; one thing that I took from learning to spell phonetically was that when I entered public elem I remember one time I was writing the alphabet and wrote 'x', 'ecs', thinking to myself, why does this have three letters when all the rest have one?! I remember it like it was yesterday....

Fun room! Everything is at the child's level, but also the parent's level if they are spending much time down on the floor. I find myself wanting to hang art lower in the rest of the house since I had my first baby.

sounds more like Lisa Simpson than Maria Montessori. Funny and true (or maybe it was Marge who said that). Especially now. For me, it's more like "they keep focusing on the behavior; I keep asking 'what's driving the behavior'"
