Mark Gresham I've been asked to judge a composing competition for the Georgia chapter of the National League of American Pen Women. I accepted the task today. Submission deadline for their members is Jan. 15, 2010; awards presentation March 10, 2010. In the interim between those dates, I must decide awards among the submissions received, in a total of 3 categories: instrumental, vocal, and song lyrics.

Lots
of non-composing work to do this week, including gathering audience for
the "Irreplaceable Doodles" recital on Tuesday, Nov. 17 by Karl Henning
(composer-clarinetist) from Boston and Atlanta's own Nicole Randall-Chamberlain (composer-flutist). Y'all come, if you're close enough:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=1...67642288450
BTW: The concert could still use a few "supporter" donors. Contact me
directly if you're interested in knowing the "how" of doing that. Even
if you're not close enough to attend, it's a great way to help us out
anyway!Read More

them reacquiring the audio masters after Gasparo folded last year.
William Preucil, violin;...
Dorothy Lewis, cello; Cary Lewis piano. You have to create an account
to buy (via PayPal or credit cards), but then you can become a fan.
Dvorak and Brahms trios are available now; word is Mendelssohn trios
coming soon.Read More

Mark Gresham This afternoon: Completed composing "Essays" for viola and double string orchestra, written for violist Brett Deubner. 3 movements, 16 minutes in all. It can also be performed by viola and string nonet. (Either way, it could easily be programmed along with Osvaldo Golijov's "Last Round.") More about this new work later.

Cindy Putnam I have hardly been on FB at all lately so I've lost touch with bunches of people. How are ya?

I've posted another example of my "musique concrète" both at ReverbNation http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/song _2617803 and at Bandcamp http://markgresham.bandcamp.com/track/po p-2
"Pop" was created entirely from a single sound sample (a labial "pop"
sound with a "noisy" trailing element), manipulated only in Audacity....
Pitch, rhythm and tempo relationships are based upon the "golden mean"
ratio. However, the form is strophic, each "variation" being a simple
matter of "tempo modulation"; each iteration is increased in tempo (and
pitch) each time by a proportion derived from the "golden mean."
Phrases dovetail to hide boundary points between sections, making
transitions appear seamless. The tempi and pitch keep increasing until
compressed/raised beyond reasonable human perception points.
Originally created in early 2008, this audio was not released for public listening until October 2009.
Note: In two other works written for live performance, the final
movement of "Mortal Coils" and the outer movements of "Vagabond
Drumming III," also include time-modulations of simpler ratio, so those
changes might I've called by the more historical term "metrical
modulation" (Elliott Carter).
The "golden mean" ratio time-changes in "Pop" really require a
different term, I think, hence "tempo modulations" (which I may
inadvertently have coined in this process).
Thanks for listening to this percussive sonic experiment! Comments are welcomed. http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/song _2617803Read More

Mark Gresham "I think surrounding ourselves with icons, art, books and such to remind ourselves of who we are, where we have been and where we hope to go is essential to keeping our hearts alive. It is too easy to lose our way." --John Flurry http://www.flurrycreations.com/theblog/

As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies dráw fláme;
As tumbled over rim in roundy wells
Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell’s
Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name;
Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
Deals out that being indoors each one dwells;
Selves—goes itself; myself i...t speaks and spells,
Crying Whát I do is me: for that I came.
--Gerard Manley Hopkins
Sorry,
no recording online for this one yet, but coincidentally I have
indeed written choral music to that text. It's a companion piece for "Repeat that, repeat"--and you can see a page in the
