[11/8 Video no longer available. Will try to get a copy of it that we can post]. I’ve been in Tampa, Florida this week for AOPA Aviation Summit 2009. One of the great innovations this year is AOPA Live, a live streaming of selected portions of the event over the internet. ...

Max Trescott Garmin just came out with 4 new portable aviation GPSs, essentially replacing all but the high-end of their portable aviation units. I've put together a table to make sense of the choices now available. Good news--it now costs less to get a XM Weather capable GPS from Garmin!

Capt. Chesley Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles exemplified the high level of skill and professionalism that the traveling public expect from commercial airline pilots both during and after their incident in the Hudson River this past January. Capt. Timothy Cheney and First Officer Richard Cole exemplified just the opposite traits and deserve the revocation of their licenses by the FAA.

Max Trescott If the two pilots on NWA 188 did actually fall asleep at the controls, which bothers you most? That they fell asleep at the controls or that they may have lied afterwards to cover it up? Or are they in a no win position where they have to lie about?

The professionalism of two Northwest Airlines pilots who overflew their Minneapolis destination by 150 miles is seriously in question. While all the facts are not known, it’s quite possible that the pilots fell asleep at the controls. ...

Since January 15, 2009, Sully has needed no introduction. On that fateful day, US Air’s Flight 1549 had a chance encounter with geese that killed both engines, turning the Airbus A320 into a 150,000 pound glider. ...

Max Trescott Like a lot of people, I was interested in Sully Sullenberger's new book, Highest Duty. Few people know that I met Sully on the Hudson...well actually At the Hudson Books in the International terminal at SFO. In this post, I review his book and talk a little about meeting Sully.

Not surprisingly, the Sully I met in person is identical to the man that America has seen interviewed on radio and television. He’s a tall, distinguished looking gentleman who appears confident and professional. ...

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee reported the passage today of H.R. 3371, The Airline Safety and Pilot Training Improvement Act of 2009. One of the biggest changes is that it requires all airline pilots, including first officers, to hold an Airline Transport Pilot certificate, which requires pilots... to have a minimum of 1,500 flight hours. My informal survey of pilots suggests that most feel that the bill is the right thing to do, though it will increase the cost to become an airline pilot and may hurt fulltime flight instructors who will face increase competition from future airline pilots building time by teaching.Read More

While surfing the internet, I read an update on the David Letterman blackmail sex scandal. The key takeaway for me was that Steve Martin and Martin Short are on the show, so I’ll be watching tonight when I otherwise wouldn’t have—so that’s good for Letterman’s ratings. Is the n...

Max Trescott Getting ahead in life is tough enough without being convicted of a felon--much less eight of them. But even convicted felons have dreams of a career in aviation.
