The Ginkgo Tree is the oldest known species of tree on Earth. They have kept the dinosaurs company and the fossils have been dated to over 220 million years old. However, the Ginkgo Tree eventually vanished in most regions due to the climatic changes and impacts from space. The ginkgo was only found in southeastern China, where it was saved from extinction by the Buddhist monks who cultivated the ginkgo at their temples more than 1,500 years.
In about 800 AD the Buddhist monks brought the ginkgo to Japan.
