My sincere condolences to Philip's family and friends. My son, Joe, died of the same horrid disease on June 23, 2000 at the age of 20 so I know, only too well, how devastating meningitis is and how the death of a child/grandchild affects and changes a family.

My step mother passed in what seemed like a blink of an eye from meningitis. I understand the feelings and desire to share your story to educate others. We thought it was one of those few day flu bugs... on the four day she began to throw up and then within 24 hrs she went into a coma and never regained conciousness. She left behind a loving ... *She was only 61* It is hard to believe she has been apart from my father and her family for over a year now. ( she passed 4/22/08) The hospital did not even know she had meningitus when she arrived by ambulance- they gave the code for stroke. It was not until the spinal tap was complete did they know what they are dealing with.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you spread information or edcation on this subject.

Mandy Brewer-Meek

Mandy Brewer-Meek Does anyone know anything about Mycoplasma Meningitis? My son had it when he was just a couple weeks old. He's 15 now. It's a extremely rare form of meningitis and I'd like to find out more about it.

Meningitis Research Foundation
We are sorry to hear your son had mycoplasma meningitis as a baby. Did he require extensive hospital treatment? Has he been left with any long term after effects?

Mycoplasma are a group of primitive (very simple) bacteria that can cause disease, often respiratory infections, in people. They rarely cause serious illness in healthy people, but ... Read Moresometimes these infections can develop into more severe illnesses, such as pneumonia or even meningitis. As your son was a very young baby when he got ill, his immune system would not have been fully developed, and this may have made him more susceptible to the bacteria.

We hope this helps to answer your question. If you have anymore questions just send us a message.

Thanks for posting Jeannette. It's true that meningitis can affect anyone at any age - although it is more common in young children & young adults. That's why it's so important to know the symptoms. You can find out more about who can be affected and the symptoms on our website http://www.meningitis.org/awareness-education
Kelly Townsend

Kelly Townsend My little girl got meningococcal meningitis & septicaemia when she was 7 months old. At the hospital got told she probably only had 2 hours to live. Luckily they managed to save her! I will never forget the staff at the Victoria hospital in Kirkcaldy for that. She is now 3 and there is absolutely nothing wrong with her. I cant believe how lucky she was. When i read some of these stories it breaks my heart. I have since absailed down Falkirk wheel to raise money and will continue to try and help. I just wish i could magic up a potion to make it all go away! Really big hugs to everybody that this has affected xx

Greg Wayland

Greg Wayland My name is Greg, my son Reece passed away 7th November 2004, he was 4 years old. He had been in and out of hospital for most of October but was repeatedly mis-diagnosed. The doctors went from a small viral infection to possible epilepsy.
He was admitted again on the 5th, but once again the doctors were unsure what to do. The following day (Saturday) he deteriorated very quickly and I was told that a medical team from Guys were on the way to transfer Reece.
By the time I arrived at Guys I was told that Reece had passed away, but that brain stem tests had to be done. For 24 hours I sat with Reece on my own holding, hoping and praying that I could swap places with him.
