ZINESTER'S GUIDE TO NYC wants your drawings!
Greetings, artists! (Spalding Grey once said that he would go anywhere and do anything as long as the person with t...he megaphone kept referring to him as 'artist') I'm working on The Zinester's Guide to NYC, an illustrated, low-budget guidebook to New York City, heavy on D...IY and participatory events, to be published by Microcosm in the fall of 2010.Perhaps you have been to New York City. Perhaps you have even, gasp, lived here! If so, I would like to invite you to participate in this project. What I'm looking for are clean line drawings (the kind that reproduce well at small sizes) depicting NYC landmarks, eating establishments, drinking establishments, street scenes, fauna (pigeons, rats, chihuahuas, subway musicians), flora (Greek coffee cups, manhole covers, front bike wheels still attached to street signs long after the rest of the bike was stolen) ... you get the picture right? To this end, I've even pulled together an illustration wish list. The finished book will be 256 pages5 1/2”w x 7h”The illos can either be tall verticals, long horizontals, quarter pages or half pages. Most of the illustrations will correspond to the content...so if you have a great drawing of an obscure Bed-Stuy roti shack, please consider writing a 2 or 3 sentence listing, which will be credited to you! If you enjoy that sort of thing, there's a full-bore survey to fill out -I'd be thrilled if you'd fill it out as much or as little as you like (though i'm gunning for much)Previously published work is wonderful, as long as you have the rights to reprint it. Brand new work is also wonderful. Our one spot color for shading is sage green. Let me know if you don’t want your drawings shaded. If you want to determine the shading yourself, I will need two tiffs or jpegs – one showing the black lines, and the other that is shading only, in black, that will, through the magic of color seps, become green. It’s fine if your work is slightly skewed from a reality perspective. In the Zinesters Guide to Portland, there's an illustration of ducks browsing at Jackpot Records. Rock on, Donald.Deadline’s Thanksgiving, but smoke ‘em if you got em. I’d be delighted(and reassured) to get illustrations at your earliest convenience.Hey, does anyone love love love to make maps? Because there are a couple of neighborhoods that are going to need it.Given the low budget, labor of love-y nature of this project, contributors will not be paid in anything so bourgeois as cash money. In addition to Joe's and my undying appreciation, and a permanent link to any website you may have on the as-yet-unbuilt Zinester's Guide toNYC page of my sprawling website (www.ayunhalliday.com),your zines and comics will be plugged with contact info in a special resources section. Any illustrations and listings you supply will be credited to you. Please email me at Ayun@AyunHalliday.com if you'd like to be part of this project!Your spaniel,Ayun Halliday Chief PrimatologistThe East Village Inky zine
