Markus Egger  I am sitting in my home in Austria, remotely checking the energy consumption of my home in Houston in real time through Microsoft Hohm. Pretty darn cool if you ask me! Now if I could only do this the other way around, that would be cool too. But then again, my Austrian home is already pretty energy efficient.

Microsoft Hohm Recently my neighbor remodeled her kitchen, and I (as a bit of an energy geek) was secretly happy to see that included a new, energy-efficient refrigerator. Sadly that secret happiness only lasted about 20 minutes....

Microsoft Hohm Are you among the estimated 60 percent of Americans whose commute to work is under 10 miles? If so, you may want to consider a slowly growing trend: ditching the car in favor of a battery-assisted or electric bike to get to work.

If there are good bike lane/trails and flat, 10 miles is a pretty easy commute So you should go for it.

I did this last year for most of spring through fall in Southern California and a typical ride was about 40 min (11 mi each way). if I ...got mostly green lights.

With an electric bike, that probably would have gone faster.

        • Galen Dean another saving tip, especially for the spare fridge; partially empty or nearly empty refrigerators use more energy because there is more air to cool, which does not retain the temperature well. Fill it up with jugs or bottles of water to take up air space.

        • Microsoft Hohm Hi Matt! No, the Columbia U study did not find that most of the tips were "pointless." Rather, turning lights off has less of an environmental impact than, say, upgrading from a 20-year-old inefficient heating system to a new, highly efficient one. Less impact does not equal no impact! The point of the Hohm article was instilling energy awareness in kids and teaching them to do stuff within their control. Children do not usually purchase highly efficient heating systems ;) Thanks for the comment! --Holly

Maybe pointless was too strong a word. The idea behind my post was to educate folks that there are some significantly higher impact options which should be considered. New attic insulation for example.

Granted, children don't do that sort o...f thing and there is great benefit in instilling green values in children. That goes without saying.See More

Microsoft Hohm So you’re searching for a new TV—but not just any TV. You need one that’ll look great when you’re watching Law & Order reruns and still be energy efficient. But how do you choose? Is there a way to spot an energy-efficient TV just by looking?

        • Roger Hsieh I believe LED units currently have the lowest power needs for the same screen size compared to LCD and Plasma. If you can find their Watt ratings, that will give you the info you need.

        • Frank Gorgenyi Manufacturing, shipping, resale for the new TV and recycling the old one all have energy costs. Unless you watch alot of TV if the goal is to be "green" keeping your old LCD/Plasma is likely better then buying new.
